Book Swapping

One of the final events in our Book Week was a Book Swap.

Children brought in a selection of books that they had read several times and then had the opportunity to choose another that was new to them. Hopefully many children went home with another exciting read!

More Book Buddies at Provo Primary School

Yesterday, the Grade 1 and 3 got together to share and read books together. The Grade 3s read popular picture books to the Grade 1s and in return, the Grade 1s read their reading books to them. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to our next reading buddy time.

Book Buddies

On Thursday, the older children were ‘book buddies’ for the younger ones: this meant that they chose a book that younger children might like, read it so as they knew what it was all about, then shared it with some younger children (remembering to use expression and to let them see the pictures).

The second day of Book Week saw the children of Provo Primary taking part in the annual Bike/Walk-a-thon! Great fun was had by all and the children really tried their best to complete as many laps as they could in 30 minutes.

We have lots of activities planned as part of Book Week, so keep checking the Blog to see what we have been getting up to!

Books come to life to start Book Week at our school

Book Week 2007 started today with over a hundred characters from different books visiting the school!

img_2020.jpg img_2003.jpg

The children (and staff) came to school dressed as a character from a book they had read. Many of the children went to great lengths to depict their character with costumes, face paints and often props!

From New York to Provo Primary

img_1867.jpg What a treat!!!

Greg Askins, the renowned classical guitarist, dropped in to share his talent with the children last Thursday. He was in TCI on holiday but still found time to come to school to talk and play to grades 3 – 6. It was fascinating to hear him speak about his career as a soloist and as part of the duo Nylon Wound. Best of all, though, was listening to him playing the guitar. He played several pieces; explaining about their composers and the historical context.

Raising Small Souls – Celebrating Individuality

animalschoolkangarooa160207.jpgWith an up-coming week of parent/teacher conferences, a link to the thought-provoking movie “Animal School” by ‘Raising Small Souls’ serves as a great reminder to us all, that children each have different needs and learning styles and should each be appreciated, loved, and encouraged for their individuality. Developing a strong partnership between home and school is fundemental to this, as together we strive to nurture and develop each child’s inherent abilities and emerging strengths.

Say Cheese!

school-photo-060207.jpgHave you ordered your school photos yet? The final date for orders is Friday 16th February.

You can view all the photos at Tropical Imaging, using the event code password on the order form that was sent home last week. Drop into the office and pick up an extra copy if you need one.

Once again, a big thank you to Tropical Imaging for their continued support and amazing photography!

Last year, Tropical Imaging raised over $400 for the school through the photos, and this went towards some much-needed computer equipment. This year, with more pupils, they are aiming for more, as well as donating a matching amount to their chosen charity – UNICEF.

So be sure to have ordered all the photos you wish, knowing that your support will help ‘let there be “real smiles” everywhere!’

Healthy Eating, Happy Children

Children at Provo Primary are encouraged to be happy and healthy at all times. At break time children should have a ‘healthy snack’.

As well as contributing to keeping children healthy and fit, a healthy snack could also help increase their concentration and therefore assisting learning.

A Thousand Thanks!

Last Friday was ‘Bad Taste/Bad Hair’ Dress Down Day in order to raise money for UNICEF.

Throughout the week children had collected from friends and family as well as from their own funds because they knew that just a little would make a difference to other children .

11_img_1457.jpg 98_wheel.jpg 94_water.jpg

Wow, What a fantastic result!!! Over $1,000 was collected which will go to help children have clean water, good health, education and adequate food.

You have made a difference to hundreds of children – well done every single one of you!!

Click here to see more of the day.

UNICEF – Kids Helping Kids!

Today we began our 4th annual collection for UNICEF.

In our school assembly, we learned about UNICEF and how it helps children around the world to have access to basic things like medicine, clean water, food, and an education.

boite.gifWe learned how we could all make a big difference to the lives of other children, by fund raising for money to put into our little orange boxes and by donating a dollar on our special ‘Bad Taste or Bad Hair Day’ dress-down day on Friday 27th October.

We learned that we truly have the power to change the world, because it only takes pennies to save a life! Every penny counts, with only 7 cents paying for crayons for a class of children, or $1 to pay for a shot that helps children not get sick.2006_wymcb_pdf.gif

Help your child learn the importance of helping others in need and to feel empowered to make a real difference. Talk to them about how they could fund raise at home, e.g., by doing chores and remind them to return their orange box on dress-down Day, Friday 27th October for the big count up!
gametruck.GIFLearn even more about how UNICEF helps children by playing the UNICEF World Heroes game. Your mission: collect essential supplies in your UNICEF truck, and deliver them to kids in need around the world!

History Matters

Although most of us were not born in the Turks and Caicos Islands, this is where we live and it is important to know how it got to be the way it is now. Miss Marva from Palencia Academy has been doing a Social Studies project which includes looking at the history of the islands. We’ve found that different groups of people have inhabited the islands at different times leaving their mark. They came, and left, for different reasons but have all contributed to the way that Turks and Caicos has developed. We will also help shape how it continues to develop.

I am pleased to announce that we are taking part in ‘History Matters’ national blog. 17th October 2006 has been designated National Blog Day and Provo Primary will have their contribution accepted as part of a snapshot of life in the 21st century. Look out for the published article.

School Meals’ success continues

Due to the success of the trial period, we are extending the menu offered to children in school. Hot lunches will now be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Judging by the children’s (and parents’) comments, I am sure they will be a popular option! Click on the link to see October’s menu.

Children enjoy Golden Times

gt1.jpg

Golden Time came to Provo Primary this week as a way of rewarding all those children who behave well, work hard and keep the rules in school. This is a weekly session of 30 minutes of non-curricular time when children take part in a planned activity or range of activities, which are fun and enjoyable. Golden Time is special and is a real highlight of the week.
