This evening was our storytelling evening. The children came to school dressed in their pajamas and brought their favourite cuddly toys, pillows and comforters. The evening started with a traditional tale from the Turks and Caicos, told by our Director of Culture, David Bowen. Everyone was mesmorised and captivated by the story of a Salt Raker who’s tale explained why the ocean is salty. The children then went to their classes to enjoy stories with their teachers and we ended the evening with cookies and milk. Everyone enjoyed listening to all the stories and went home to have sweet dreams!  Thank you to everyone who helped make this storytelling evening such a great success. Click below to see some movies of the evening. Our Grade 1-7 Sports’ Day was a great success today and was packed full of fun. The children were full of energy, determined to do their best and displayed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. See the movie below for all the highlights.

The Early Years theme for Education Week is “The Creative Mind of the Child” and we aim to recognise the creative spark and imagination of each child by offering a variety of activities for them to explore.
Preschool have been cooking. Their cooking recipe for Friendship Soup, allowed them to choose vegetables to bring from home in order to create the special soup together. It was delicious! They also created a strawberry cake for the bear in the story ‘The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and Big, Hungry Bear’. Everyone took turns to help. Take a look at them busy decorating the cake in the slideshow.
This week is our National Education Week and each year at Provo Primary we mark this time with a special ‘theme week’ of fun activities. The theme for the Early Years classes is ‘The Creative Mind of a Child’ and for the Grades 1 -7 ‘Time Travellers’. Some activities will be class based and some whole school. Armed with gloves and bags, a group of our children from JK through to Grade 7 supported National Clean-up Day today by helping to clean up one of our popular beaches, Sapodilla Bay. We often visit this beach as an end of the year treat so this was a good beach for us to choose. A big thank you to all the children and parents who came to support this event.
All the children from Grade 1 to Grade 7 also cleaned up our school grounds on Friday afternoon in recognition of the campaign.

Today, we had a visit from author Donna Seim. She has written a book called ‘Where is Simon, Sandy?’ which retells a Caribbean folktale about a donkey that wouldn’t quit. Donna took the scene of our capital island of Grand Turk for the setting of her story. All the children in Grades 1, 2 and 3 enjoyed listening to Donna read the story and they had plenty of comments and questions to ask her. At the end, the children sang the TCI cultural song, ‘Dry Conch’ to Donna as a thank you. Donna was accompanied by Mr. David Bowen, our Director of Culture. She kindly donated a copy of the book for our library, but if you want your own copy, you can buy it at the Unicorn Bookstore. All proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Turks and Caicos National Museum’s children’s programme. When we wear a poppy, it helps us remember and be thankful for the many people who gave their lives in war for our freedom.  On Remembrance Day we were able to make a donation to the Turks and Caicos ex-Serviceman’s Legion and wear a poppy.
Representatives from the National Trust are making sure that everyone is aware of the importance of maintaining the TCI’s ecosystem…and they are starting with the little ones. A group from the National Trust visited Provo Primary School yesterday…

Friends of Provo Primary (FoPPS) organised a delicious Indian meal served at Bay Bistro, together with a silent auction of beautiful art work produced by each of the classes in the school. It was a winning combination with parents, family and friends enjoying a delightful evening. We would like to express a big thank you to all the people who helped the children create the art work, to those who organised the evening and to Clive and Joan Whent for the first class cuisine and elegant setting. There was a frenzy of bidding as each piece of art work was auctioned off with the encouragement of emcee Mark Dunbavand. All in all over $4000 was raised and this will allow us to install 2 much needed A/C units in our new Hummingbird Music Room and in Miss Sarah’s Kindergarten Room. Thank you everyone.
We had our first Halloween Party at the school last night and, in spite of the rain, it was a highly attended event packed full of fun and games. Organisers Bridgette and Bernadette and their helpers transformed the school grounds and set up an amazing array of halloween surprises, including an amazing spooky haunted house that was a thrilling success. Children from the school and community came dressed up in their costumes, danced on the stage to the Monster Mash and played all of the games. They munched through hot dogs and chilli and of course lots of Halloween candy goodies! We have a feeling that this event might become a firm fixture in our future calendar!
A well known ancient African proverb states that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and it is so true. In order to raise children successfully, we can’t do it alone. Here at Provo Primary School we have a strong sense of community, with families and friends all striving to work together for the same cause. The success of our school today is based upon this community spirit that we feel so strongly. Everyone in our school works together towards the same goals and we reap the rewards of working as a team.
Our Grade 6/7 took time out from their studies to offer some help pupils from Iris Stubbs Primary on South Caicos that were affected by Hurricane Ike.

BOOKWORMS from Oseta Jolly primary school now have a whole library of books to get their teeth into thanks to kind-hearted pupils, teachers and parents from Provo Primary. The Providenciales private school delivered more than 500 brand new books worth $2,200 to the Government-run school in Blue Hills on Wednesday.
Returning to school following the hurricanes, our annual beach day was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and to meet and welcome all our new families and teachers.

We are so proud of our Grade 6 graduates. All 6 graduated on Thursday – and I’m pleased to say 5 will be staying with us next year as part of our new Grade 6/7 class. I am really looking forward to seeing what new heights we can scale together.

As we head towards the end of another school year, we would like to share with you some scores and statistics from our recent tests.
On Monday 2nd June, all of the children from Grade 5/6 of Provo Primary School flew off to Orlando for 4 days. The field trip was organised through an American Company, allowing us to access Disney’s Youth Education Scheme and included 3 workshops run by Disney experts in Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios as well as giving us access to the other activities in the parks too!
Looking for a fun educational site that can help children improve your child’s spelling skills. Miss Alison recommends that you check out Spelling City
This site:
– contains over 25,000 words, including plurals, contractions, future and past tenses
– uses a REAL human voice that says both the word and the word in a sentence
– has a ‘Teach Me’ function that spells out the word using both visual and auditory input to improve retention
– allows parents to enter and save their own spelling lists for their children
– lets children play games with their words or any saved lists
– enables parents to save and share their lists.
This is an American website so remember that our Grades will be one lower on this site – eg. Our Grade 1 is an American Kindergarten and our Grade 3 will be an American Grade 2.
Presently, this site is best viewed in Internet Explorer as it has some known issues with Firefox.
Playtimes have been far more interesting recently with a greater choice and variety of activities for the children. Some of the money raised by FoPPS went to provide the children with a range of play equipment. Along with the sailshades purchased earlier this means that children can enjoy a quiet game in the shade or learn to play an exciting new game with their friends.
New games include ‘giant’ versions of Chess, Four in a Row, Checkers, Backgammon, and Jenga along with traditional games such as Tic Tac Toe and Ring Toss.

For those of you interested in learning to play the guitar, this is a great site. The teacher, Ben, really breaks the teaching down into easy to follow segments. Although some of the lessons are easier than others, they are probably suitable for older children and adults. Josh is thoroughly enjoying them and is looking forward to playing when he comes back to Provo.
Santa has been spotted vacationing on Middle Caicos over the holiday season!
