JK Hunt for Gold on St Patrick’s Day

The Junior Kindergarten were surprised to find mysterious golden footprints all around the school on St Patrick’s Day.  They had been left by a Leprechaun who had hidden golden nuggets, coins and shamrock leaves for them to find.  Following the trail, they each searched for four golden nuggets, five coins and shamrocks with the letters of their names on them.  After the treasure hunt, the children sorted out their treasures making sure that they had the right amount of gold, coins and shamrocks. They were encouraged to create their names using the shamrocks leaves to see if the leprechaun had left them good luck wishes. [Read more…]

Ambulance Visits Provo Primary!

The Junior Kindergarten are learning about community helpers, but when the Turks and Caicos Emergency Medical Service crew came to show them their emergency response vehicles, the sirens alerted the whole school of their presence and every class came out to have a look.

A big thank you to the crew for showing the children the inside of an ambulance and telling them about how some of the equipment is used, and for talking about the responsibilities of being a paramedic.

Click on ‘read more’ to see more photos but do not panic!  Mr. Toby wasn’t really injured.  He was simply volunteering to demonstrate how people are secured to the stretcher.  Two of the children in his class then gave careful instructions on how to raise the stretcher and move him into the ambulance. Roman Settlement discovered in Provo!

Children in Flamingo Class have been learning about how real historians find out about life in the past. We wondered how is it possible to know how Romans cleaned themselves. Or whether it is actually possible to know what a Roman kitchen looked like? Does anyone really understand how and why people celebrated Roman gods?

As part of our Theme Week activities, parents were invited to join us in undertaking a real archaeological dig, so that we might discover how all this is possible. One morning, we all set about finding evidence of a previously undiscovered Roman settlement right here in Provo!

When the Farmers met the Paleontologists!

To celebrate theme week, Preschool and Kindergarten got together to share their learning. Preschool  got to explore Kindergarten’s  dinosaur museum, the dinosaur dig fossil sorting centre and play in our dinosaur small world. It was a lot of fun for Kindergarten and Preschool to pair off and for the Kindergarten children to lead the little ones around ‘Dino Land’.  The next day the Preschool children invited the Kindergarten to their room.

Key Stage 2 Rugby

The children in Years 3-6 have been excited to try their hand at another fantastic sport this half term! We were delighted to offer a course of Rugby ‘taster’ sessions when we received the offer of coaching from the Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Football Union!

These sessions have focused on the key skills of passing, movement and game-play. Some children, who already participate in the TCIRFU’s clubs, were keen to show off their skills in the sport, while others were excited by the challenge of something new!

We will watch this space and look forward to seeing our students developing a good understanding of another exciting team sport.

Why were the Dolphins put in the Stocks….?

Friday afternoon in the ‘stocks’ at Ports of Call was very busy.  The Year 3 Dolphins had committed many a crime in their Tudor Life. Cutting purses full of money from the rich.. stealing bread from the bakers in the market place..stealing vegetables and herbs from the farmers fields…pick-pocketing a golden watch from the land owner up the lane…stealing a chicken from their neighbour… What a ghastly lot!

“But we were hungry and poor and could not get work” they howled. All their suffering however was rewarded by a delicious ice-cream treat from the nearby parlour – yummy!

A big thank you to all those parents who participated in the ‘stock experience’.  With the Turks and Caicos thought to be discovered by the Europeans during Tudor times, it was a great way to link our topic to our local environment.

Year 5’s Secret Writing

Have you ever fancied yourself as a spy? In order to be a proper spy you will need to know how to read and write secret messages.  In this experiment, Year 5 learned how to create them.

In the process they learned that iodine can check for the presence of starch and Vitamin C. In a bowl we mixed one tablespoon of cornstarch and a tablespoon of water.  Using this mixture, we took a toothpick and wrote a secret message on a piece of paper.   We waited for our message to dry to see the results.   It was barely visible on the paper.   Then we dipped our paper into an iodine mixture to reveal the secret message.  “Happy Birthday” appeared in dark purple.  It was no longer a secret and a nice surprise for the birthday boy in our class. This proved our theory that iodine reacts with the starch creating a dark purple message.  The white paper also turned a lighter purple, due to the small amount of starch it already contains.

In order to make the message disappear again, we would just add lemon juice.  When lemon juice is painted over top of the writing, the Vitamin C in the juice reacts with the iodine to make a new colourless compound and the writing disappears.

Year 5 have completed their first course in how to become a Spy.   Who says Science has to be boring?

JK’s Fairy Tale Classroom

The Junior Kindergarten have been busy transforming their classroom into a fairy tale / nursery rhymes wonderland.  Creating a variety of role-play areas together, the children have enjoyed visiting these, dressing up in costumes and wearing masks to re-enacted different fairy tales and nursery rhymes with their friends.  The children used old cardboard boxes to create the houses belonging to the three little pigs, decorating them with cut out paper bricks and straw and sticks from the environment.  The house play area has become the house of the three bears and a tent area has been set up for the kittens with mittens.  Everyone also worked together to make a giant castle with the waffle blocks.  Read on to see lots of photos of the children learning as they play during this wonderful cross-curricular topic.

It’s Time for Punch and Judy in Year Two

Year 2 combined their Drama, Literacy and Design Technology lessons to put together a spectacular show of Punch and Judy. Punch and Judy is a traditional British, popular puppet show featuring the characters of Mr. Punch and his wife, Judy. The performance consists of a sequence of short scenes, each depicting an interaction between two characters, most typically the anarchic Punch and one other character. It is often associated with traditional English seaside culture

The Children loved watching a Punch and Judy Show, then re-creating the puppets using their own designs. They thought carefully about the characters and the plot, making their own scripts and then acting them out to their friends.  Read on to see some photo of the children at work.

Year 6 Debating Dilemma!

Once again the Year 6’s showed off their skills as budding lawyers-to be in a team against team debate. The issue was ‘ Is television a good or bad influence on children?’ Both sides presented their arguments with clear and convincing reasons backed up with data where they could. Dressed to the nines in their smartest attire and with myself as official judge and peacekeeper, it really felt as if we were in a courtroom! Two outstanding debaters were: CD, whose strength and conviction in his own argument was impressive, and MG who had clearly researched and prepared for her part in the debate exceptionally well!

Pelican Class Gymnasts

The Year Ones have really enjoyed their gymnastics lessons at the Sports Centre. Over the course of the six lessons, they have worked on a variety of skills such as balancing (on 2, 3, and 4 points) and jumping and traveling in different ways. They have also learnt how to start and finish a routine with gymnastic poise. Week by week, as the children have been developing and improving their skills, they have each worked on creating their own routine. During the last session they performed these to the class. School Council Recycling Trip

Today, the School Council visited the TCI Waste Disposal Plant, on a fact finding mission to discover how we can play our part in recycling on the island.  They learnt about the importance of recycling and the processes that our rubbish goes through at the plant.  The children asked lots of questions and came away with lots of information and ideas.  The school has 2 new recycling bins and the School Council will now be organising a whole school campaign to use them as much as we can.  We would like to pass on a big thank you to Ramez Hakoura from TCI Waste Disposal for allowing us to visit.  We look forward to learning more from him when he comes to our school to help the School Council lead an assembly on recycling .  Click here to watch a local TV report about their trip.

Taking Ownership of the Library!

Inspired by lots of newly bought fiction books and our computer system needing updating, a chance to make a change and take ownership of the how the library is organised was seized by KS2 children this week.  Discussion, debate, research and lots of sorting occurred as the children worked together to re-organise all the fiction books from the library shelves into their respective genres, during World Book Day Celebrations last week.

“It felt good to work together to organise the library”…”I like how the different genre stickers will help me find the sort of books I’m interested in”…”I think our new library looks bright and colourful”.

Family Skate Night

The goal was ‘a good old family night out’ and around 150 skaters and non-skaters alike agreed that this was successfully achieved, all having great fun at our PTA’s first annual ‘Family Skate Night’.

“It was wonderful to see all ages (ranging in age from 3 to 50+) from Provo Primary and the local community, joining together to party the night away,” commented Haley, one of the organisers.

Many of the older generation found themselves being taken back to the roller-disco times of their youth – although in those days, the skates looked a little different!  A few were even seen holding hands as they circled the rink together!

Well done to an excellent team of parents for putting on this much enjoyed event.  After such success, perhaps we now just need to change the annual bit, to termly – or perhaps add in a parent roller-disco revival night!

Pyjama Day Storytelling, 2012

As an early celebration of World Book Day, Dress Down Friday became “Pyjama Day” this month as we all donned our finest night attire to raise money for Provo Children’s Home.  As a special treat, we ended the day with story time courtesy of Mr. David Bowen and his drum.  We settled down with our pillows and cuddly toys to hear the story of two boys who found a barrel of delicious coconut water on their way to the well.  They certainly learned their lesson when one of the boys drank too much and made himself very sick indeed!  The moral of the tale? “Be smart and be good!”  The boys in the story definitely had a thing or two to learn on that score!
Mr. David then told us that 1 billion people on the earth don’t have access to clean drinking water.  That’s a seventh of the earth’s population!  Lots of people also have to walk a long way to collect water from a well, just like Mr. David did when he was a child. It’s very hard work as we found out from the song he taught us – “Got a Bucket on my Head – Yes Sir, Yes.”  March is World Water Month, so we’re going to do our bit to be smart and good with the water we use.  Many thanks Mr. David.
“Pig in a pen – my story end…”

Congratulations – 500 today!

Congratulations to all our teachers over the years – this is our 500th blog entry!

We are very proud of our blog and how we have kept adding to it over the past five and half years.  It offers an insight to our school in action, following our children as they progress through the school and highlighting our varied and inspiring activities.  We hope you enjoy seeing all the photos and videos and that you find it helpful in giving you access to all the latest school information.

Growing and Changing in Kindergarten

This week, Kindergarten has investigated how fruits, vegetables and flowers grow.  We have read lots of different storybooks and non-fiction books about growing and changing. We visited the garden of one of the children in the class for an outdoor play and a picnic.  We also got to plant 3 different kinds of seeds and starter plants—bok choy, black beans and pumpkin.  We also got to smell and taste mint and basil.  Thank you to the family for letting us visit their lovely garden!

Kindergarten Journey’s into the Land of the Dinosaurs!

This half term, Kindergarten has enjoyed learning all about dinosaurs. We’ve learnt about how dinosaurs grew from eggs, facts about lots of different dinosaurs (Did you know that dinosaurs that walk on four legs are plant eaters?).  We painted a Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs mural.   In our role play area we created a dinosaur museum and acted as tour guides for the visiting Year 2 class.  As our culminating task, we made junk model dinosaurs!  It was so interesting to see how creative all the children were in picking out their materials for the different body parts, cutting, gluing and taping independently, and then finally, painting their dinosaurs! Please check out the pictures to see how much fun we had learning about dinosaurs and making our 3D dinosaurs. [Read more…]

Una Semana Muy Ocupada – A Very Busy Week

It seems Flamingo Class are very busy people! They’ve been learning how to tell us all about their packed schedules in Spanish classes and have created this wonderful video to show everyone what a multi-talented bunch they are! This half term they have been learning how to use different verbs to talk about their pastimes.  They have linked this together with the days of the week to give us a run down of all the activities in which they are involved. In our classes, the pupils have also learnt how to change verbs to talk about other people and the things they do in their spare time, as well as using verbs in the infinitive to give their opinions about different activities.  In doing this, they have also managed to acquire a few new adjectives to justify their opinions. Pretty amazing stuff! Take a look at the video to see just how much these excellent Spanish speakers manage to fit into their week! “¡Buen trabajo, Flamingo Class!” (Good work, Flamingo Class!)

Preschool Enjoy their Indoor and Outdoor Activities

In the Preschool class, we have thoroughly enjoyed playing in our hospital role-play area, pretending to be doctors, nurses and receptionists and looking after our ‘patients’ and baby dolls with great care.  Our hospital then went on to include a hair salon!

Building and construction have played a big part of classroom life and the children have been busy finding new ways of using our construction toys.  We have also explored the topic ‘On The Farm’, and the children have adored painting and sticking to create farm animals and machinery.  All their art work is making our classroom extremely bright and colourful.

As well as all of these indoor activities, the children have been very busy outside.  Playing with balls on our school soccer field is definitely a firm favourite!

Please read on to see a selection of photos of our Preschool’s enjoying their activities.
