TCI National Education Week, 2016

tci-crestNational Education Week here in the Turks and Caicos will be observed between February 28th  – March 4th , 2016 under the theme, “Success for Every Learner”.

This year’s theme song for Education Week 2016 is written by Clement Howell High School Music Department and performed by the staff and students of the schools.  Well done to all involved!  Here are the lyrics if you would like to sing along.

During the week, schools will host a myriad of activities all over the country and the general public is encouraged to join in unity with educators across the country in support of the theme.   Here at Provo Primary we will have a variety of activities sprinkled throughout the week.  With World Book Day celebrations on Thursday 3rd including visits from British West Indies Collegiate student storytellers and our ‘Open House’ showcases on ‘STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Learning in the Early Years’ and ‘Topic-Based Learning in Year 1-6’ on Friday 4th, we are set for a busy week ahead.

JK’s Soup and Bread Making has all of their Senses Tingling!

jk-soup-bread-feb-2016 (1)This week in J.K. we concluded our 5 Senses topic by doing some cooking and baking. This was a wonderful hands-on activity that used every sense. The children delighted in measuring, mixing, smelling and tasting all of the raw and cooked vegetables in the noodle soup and had a brilliant time kneading their bread rolls.

This activity tied in well with our core focus in Early Years this term, which is STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Look out on the school blog for more STEM related photos from our upcoming Open House next week!

How Wild are Year 4?

yr-4-wild-things-feb-2016 (1)This term Year 4 have been showing Provo Primary that they really are the most WILD of all the wild things! They have accomplished this through a Talk for Writing project in Literacy this half term for their Age Of Exploration topic.

Looking at adventure stories, we focused on the story of Where the Wild Things are (WtWTA). They story of young Max and how he used his imagination to discover a far off land inhabited by Wild Things.

But first we had to learn the story of WtWTA. We did this through story maps and oral recitals. The children really immersed themselves in the Talk for Writing approach and we started to notice some children began to show signs of being Wild Things!

Year 6 unleash their creativity with our new ‘Makey Makey’ kits

yr-6-makey-makey-feb-2016 (1)Year 6 were presented with the task of investigating some new technology resources at Provo Primary School today. Advertised as ‘an invention kit for the 21st century’, it was a session of experimentation, creativity and collaboration, with three groups exploring our new ‘Makey Makey’ interface controling kits.

Each group was given a Makey Makey kit, along with access to an array of resources to use with it.  Encouraged to read and follow the instructions included in the box, and to simply try things out, it wasn’t long before each group understood their potential and were busy working together to come up with their own inventive applications. Connecting their Makey Makeys with cucumbers, potatoes, carrots,  coins and playdough they were soon playing pianos and bongo drums, and creating control pads for computer games.

By the end of the session, through their own experimentation and interest, the students had learnt about the basics of computer input devices, had explored circuit making and had investigated the conductivity of different materials. Not bad for a 60 minute lesson!  It was particularly exciting to witness the moment when they realised that they themselves were conductive!

Makey Makeys are simple invention kits but, with so many possibilities, they offer incredible potential for child-initiated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.  Our Year 6 were certainly enthralled and buzzing with ideas on what they are planning to develop in their next session.  We look forward to seeing what they come up with and sharing their creations with you!

Sharing a little love and appreciation at Provo Primary School

secret-angel-week-2016It’s ‘Secret Angel Week’ here at Provo Primary – a week where everybody gets to experience a little love and appreciation at the workplace and show just how much human beings can truly connect to one another and share happiness together — when we make ‘love and care’ a workplace “game”.

A bit like a ‘Secret Santa’, all of our staff have become a ‘Secret Angel’ to another staff member (Human).  Over the week we will anonymously shower our ‘Human’ with gifts, love, kindness and treats.  It’s wonderful to see how creative everyone gets, how they cleverly we all disguise our identity from our chosen ‘Human’ and how much we enjoy the challenge of trying to guess our own ‘Secret Angel’.

All will be revealed on Friday after school when the ‘Secret Angels’ will reveal who their ‘Human’ has been.

This year many of our classes are also enjoying a ‘Secret Angel Day’ in a similar way, spreading the joy across the school.  It sure is a happy week here at Provo Primary!

If you would like to enjoy a ‘Secret Angel Week’ at your school or workplace please see the rules of the game below. [Read more…]

Kindergarten Prepare Stone Soup with a Turks and Caicos Twist

k-soup-feb-2016 (6)For our Celebrations topic and Turks and Caicos Heritage week, the Kindergarten children learned about many of the things that make Turks and Caicos beautiful and unique. They were encouraged to share their favorite thing and what it meant to them.

We learned that Turks and Caicos Islanders come together during celebrations and cook many of the old traditional foods such as Johnny Cake, Souse and Boiled Fish and Grits. We listened to the story of ‘The Stone Soup’ and made our own soup with Johnny Cake.

Celebrations are a time to dress up in our Sunday Best. In the past, this would be made from flour bags. Each child painted their own Turks and Caicos national dress or shirt to learn about the national pride of each island.

Year 2 are all in a flap (jack) about measuring

yr-2-flap-jacks (4)As part of our maths topic last week we had been learning to measure weight using scales, so what better way to put our skills into practice than measuring and weighing out ingredients?

We started off the week using a balance, finding objects that were heavier, lighter and the same, as a given weight. We then learnt how to read the amount on different measuring scales. After measuring the weight of various items around the classroom, including our shoes, we decided we were ready for the serious stuff!

Safer Internet Day is next Tuesday

WebSafer Internet Day Tuesday 9th February, 2016

How will you ‘Play Your Part for a Better Internet’?

The Internet is a wonderful tool. It is always available, contains a vast range of information and allows immediate connections with others around the globe. Here at Provo Primary computing is an integral part of our curriculum and the benefits it offers continues to be reaped by students and teachers alike. However, it is important that while embracing a digital world we maintain the same precautions and security that we would apply to the real world.

Please find some useful hints below to ensure that this safety is upheld. February 9th 2016 marks Safer Internet Day and we encourage you to bring this to the attention of your children so that they are prepared and know how to confront any challenges the Internet might throw in their direction.

Please take the time to read through some of the presentations designed by our Year 6 students. These multimedia slides offer valuable advice and suggestions to parents on how to keep the Internet fun and safe!

Thank you to K & J in Year 6 for designing this fantastic poster.

Toddlers experience with Humpty Dumpty

toddlers-humpty-jan-2016 (12)The Toddlers have been learning popular nursery rhymes so far this term. A favourite has been Humpty Dumpty and they have been exploring the rhyme in a variety of ways.

Perhaps the highlight for the children (teachers) was the experiment in using a real egg when telling the rhyme and watching it fall and breaking. The children were most concerned in seeing the broken Humpty Dumpty. However, attention quickly shifted when they were given a boiled egg to crack, peel and eat! YUM!

Preschool Shape Explorers

ps-shape-explorers-jan-2016-(24)The Preschool’s Topic, ‘It’s All About the Shapes’, has involved far more than learning just about the basic shapes, but rather exploring the world of ‘shape’.

First we went on a shape hunt around school as an introduction to the topic. Then we have investigated size, patterns, holes and tubes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed going outdoors to explore these concepts in further detail.

Take a journey of shape exploration through the eyes of our Preschool class…
