Working Together in Year 3

In Year 3 we have been realising not only the FUN, but also the importance of working together. Whether it is with one person, a group or the class. When set a task that involves working with others, we realised we had to think about a few things. For instance:

* To listen with open ears to the ideas and points of view of others.

* To share and participate – make sure we do our bit!

* To show respect to other people’s ideas, strengths and weaknesses – we can’t be good at everything!

* To recognise when things are going well or not so well –  do we need a new plan?

* To celebrate the successes of all members of the team.

* To be prepared and recognise that sometimes things don’t work out the first time, that’s ok, we can just try again and even try another way!

Take a look at some of the things we have achieved ‘together’ in Year 3. We used our ‘working together’ skills admirably and even managed to have a little bit of fun too…

JK explore Plants and Growing

In JK we are exploring and investigating all aspects of plants and growing. Every day we are leaning new facts about the nature surrounding us.

We have learned that we need plants and trees to help us breath.

Investigating fruit and vegetables has been great fun.  We discovered that some have seeds inside and some on the outside.

Come in and visit our germination/sprouting area in our classroom.

Please have a look at the pictures of the class on a nature walk. We found many different interesting plants, flowers, seeds and trees, all in our very own playground!  We enjoyed using our senses to explore everything that we discovered.

School opens for 2018

Happy New Year to all of our families (past and present) and friends, near and far around the world! We would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new parents and families to life at Provo Primary School.

Welcome back to what promises to be a busy but exciting term.  It has been lovely seeing the children returning to school today with such energy and enthusiasm, reuniting with friends, settling back into their classes and beginning the new year with a positive ‘get busy’ attitude.

Look out for more information on what’s ahead in our Term 2 calendar and class newsletters and topic maps that will be sent out this week.

Santa brings gifts for all

Dear Santa!  Thank you for coming to visit us on our last day of term today at Provo Primary School:

Thank you to the Fire Service for helping Santa to get to our school.

The fire truck was big and red, just like your sleigh

The truck made a big noise.

I hope you weren’t too hot in your suit and boots.

Your beard was as white as snow and tickled.

I love the present that you gave me.  It was a book.  Thank you.

Thank you for the candy cane.

I hope you have a safe journey back to the North Pole.

Love from all the children at PPS.

Three cheers to our Year 2 parents too for baking goodies and offering refreshments for Santa, teachers, guests and onlookers throughout the morning.

On behalf of all the staff at Provo Primary, we would like to thank everyone for all their support this term, for their kind best wishes, cards and thoughtful gifts.

In return we wish everyone a happy holiday season with all your friends and family.  See you next year!

A Celebration of Colours and Thanks

The Preschoolers have been learning about colours and how they see them in their everyday environment. We initially focused on the colours of autumn leading up to the Thanksgiving Holiday and our own holiday here in the Turks and Caicos, “A Day of Thanks”.

The children have enjoyed experimenting with colour mixing and were amazed when they saw the magical results (like discovering that red and yellow makes orange).  The children enjoyed looking at some photographs of trees with autumn colours projected onto the big whiteboard.  They also enjoyed making their very own fall trees using tissue paper.

On our Day of Thanks, the children celebrated colours again, wearing black and white like the pilgrims of long ago.  They also wore hats they had made themselves.

Going for Gaelic!

This mid-term we have been incredibly lucky to have had the chance to try out a sport that is completely new to most of us here in the T.C.I-Gaelic football Irish: Peil Ghaelach; short name Peil or Caid), commonly referred to as football or Gaelic! It is an Irish team sport, played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team’s goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) above the ground (1 point). The range of skills this game tests and improves is fantastic and has been a real eye-opener for Key Stage Two!

Jingle Jam was a jingle of fun

Santa 🎅🏻 Selfie at The Jingle Jam! What a fabulous turn out! So much festive cheer, and lovely to see all the little ones having such a jolly good time. Thank you so much to everyone that helps me to make this possible every year! 🎁

Kate Burchill

Santa delivers some special books to our friends on South.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated books for our Pen Pal Schools on South Caicos, Calvery Christian School and Iris Stubbs Primary School. Altogether we donated 12 big boxes of books – the kindness of our children is quite overwhelming.

Earlier today, Santa flew over to South with his two elf helpers from Year 5, Miss Laranda and PPPA rep, Kelsey, to deliver the books. Looking at the first photo we’ve seen, it certainly looks like it has been a fun time.  We look forward to seeing more photos and hearing more news about their special delivery on their return!

We decided to collect books when we were sad to hear that many of the schools’ books had been damaged by the Hurricanes.  The children looked on their own bookshelves and choose books that they had enjoyed that they thought others would too.

Thank you everyone.  Thank you Santa for taking time out of your busy pre-Christmas preparations to help us, and thank you to Sail Rock for helping us with transporting everyone, and all the boxes, over to South.

What does 100 look like? Year 2 can show you!

Is it possible to build every number from 1 to 100? How would we do it? Which numbers are the hardest to make? Which number would need the most bricks?

Earlier this year, Year 2 investigated how we can represent numbers with Cuisenaire Rods. At first, children added huge rows of the white “1” bricks until, eventually, they lost count of how many they had. It was hard to know the difference between 42 and 43 – those numbers are so similar! [Read more…]

Forging Friendships with Schools on South Caicos

Recently, we the Provo Primary School School Council had a super smashing time in South Caicos. The main purpose of our trip was to visit two schools that had been hit quite hard by Hurricanes Irma and Maria – The Calvary Christian School and The Iris Stubbs Primary School.

At school, we had been shown photos of the devastation that had occurred to the classrooms and school buildings. Having seen the damage, we wanted to help in some way.

We wanted to connect with the children and offer a hand of friendship from one school to another.  So, it was decided that we would start a penpal outreach programme with the two schools.

Year 3’s Roving Researchers

Below are just some of the amazing facts that Year 3 researched into and presented to the class. We learned so much, and had lots of fun finding out new things. How incredibly wonderful and marvelous the world around us is! Thank you Year 3 for sharing your findings with us.

Did you know…

One of the largest snowflakes ever recorded was 40cm long.?

A rose has between 20 – 40 petals, depending on the type of rose?

It takes a whole year for a palm tree to grow 30cm?

Volcano ash can travel as far as the length of Provo which is around 17 miles!

Invertebrate Sketching

As part of their learning in Science this term, Year 6 have been studying classification and variation within the animal kingdom. With a specific focus on invertebrates they have been finding out all sorts of scientific information which have left them informed; and fascinated to discover more about this important element of the animal kingdom.

In order to categorize invertebrates carefully, observational skills are a must! Year 6 used this skill to even greater effect in art class, which demanded a pencil sketch of invertebrates drawn from: insects, mollusks, arachnids, crustaceans, echinoderms, Cnidarians, sponges and annelids.

Please check out some of the sketches below or visit the Year 6 classroom to see more. Examine them closely and see how they used paper space to good effect; focused in on light and dark tones using shading; and used lines and curves to give an almost realistic impression!

Year 4 Meet World Explorer Sir Francis Drake!

World Exploration was amongst the many topics Year 4 and I learned about last half term. The subject is fascinating enough, but we were lucky enough to have a visit from Sir Francis Drake himself!

The children had prepared questions for him in advance and had the chance to interview him for about half an hour. He talked to us about many things including his circumnavigation of the globe, what it’s like working for the Queen of England and described Tudor London for us. We had a very rare insight in to life approximately 500 years ago.

I asked the class to add to this blog with some of their thoughts about the visit; here are some of their comments:

Golden Time – Fun Friday – ‘You know it’s all about the choice!’

Golden time took on a new spin this week for Years 2-6 with choices of activities on offer for the children to participate in.  Some children were drawn to a game of dodgeball, others to a game of Twister.  Others opted for construction play or colouring/drawing, while a group chose to have playground time and happily played on the swings together.  The emphasis was on children making their own choices on what they were interested in doing.  It was fascinating to observe the choices that different age groups made and how they all mixed and played together.  As the weeks go on, I’m sure the children will start to develop more ideas and take on more ownership of what they would like to explore during their Fun Friday session, with teachers helping to facilitate this.  It certainly was a ‘Fun Friday’.

There’s something fishy going on in SK…

It was a first time experience for many of the Senior Kindergarten class last week when Miss Laranda showed us something quite unique.  After learning all about South Caicos and the other islands in the Turks and Caicos, Miss Laranda gave us an amazing insight as to how local fish make it from the ocean on to our plates.

Miss Laranda brought in a grouper caught in South Caicos by her father and set about the process of making it into fish fingers.  Using the newly refurbished school garden, Miss Laranda thoroughly cleaned the fish, sliced off the skin and took the opportunity to show us the different parts of the fish.
