Preschool and Junior Kindergarten

Junior Kindergarten and Preschool have had a fantastic term so far!   If your child is a red bike lover, pirate or a chef, the outside area is a place where the children have enjoyed the freedom to explore, play with water and use their imaginations.

Our topic ‘All About Me’ has been lots of fun so far! Come and see our spectacular ‘Mini Me’ display – all the children and teachers have been captured in art….find us on the walls!  The children loved learning all about the 5 senses making giant senses and while Junior Kindergarten made sound shakers, the Preschool loved smelling different scents.  They all loved making lemonade and popcorn – tasting, listening and smelling things was fun!

More recently they have focused on learning about health and growing, and the talk of the week, has been Valentines Day – the Preschool class have adored making ‘marbled hearts’ and the Junior Kindergarten made ‘heart pillows’…and everyone enjoyed giving them to those they love 😉

Preschool: Going on a Bear Hunt – with Dad

The Preschool Fathers’ Day Bear Hunt was a huge success, with a great turn out of “daddies” for this interactive event!   They were all good sports, taking their shoes and socks off and joining their child in a tactile journey of fun… tracking through a playground scene recreating a grassy lane, river, mud swamp, forest, snow storm that lead to a bear cave!  I think the dads liked the cotton balls flying around in the snow storm the best!  Thanks again for great enthusiastic participation.  It was lovely to see.

Preschool – From Tiny Seeds

We are so excited to share with you our most recent study about “How things Grow”.  The children have been learning about seeds, soil, and a variety of plants.  They planted sweet basil, tomatoes, sunflowers and other seeds, to watch them grow.  We will eventually transplant these seedlings into our new garden.  Look at some photos of us planting them and then having our photo taken with them a week later.  Do you like our Earth Day Earth?

PS / JK Garden Visit

To celebrate Earth Day and all we have recently learned about plants,  the Preschool and Jr. Kindergarten enjoyed a Garden Picnic at the wonderful home of one of our parents. During this field trip the children were able to plant seeds, observe different kinds of lettuce growing (and tasted some too), as well as tomatoes, peppers and more. The children then had a lovely play swinging, sliding, climbing, and bouncing on a trampoline! They enjoyed singing songs together and listening to a few stories on a blanket under the trees. It was a perfect way to celebrate “How things Grow” and to enjoy Earth Day. See more photos here.

Preschoolers Explore How Things Grow

The Preschoolers have been exploring, learning and having conversations about seeds, leaves, soil, flowers and thinking about “How things grow”.

They have been enjoying our sensory table working with real dirt using rakes, spades, and shovels.  The Science table has had an array of leaves, plants, seeds and books to explore. The children have made threaded bird feeders and have hung them around the school for the birds to eat.  They have also created their own flower and plant pictures.

The children are particularly excited to share with you their latest recipe for “Dirt cake”.  They made it together using chocolate pudding, gummy worms, marshmallows, and crumbled up wheat and dairy free chocolate cookies: – ).  After a thorough mixing, the “Dirt Cake” was shoveled into a pot and a beautiful flower planted in it.  Moments later, it was served up with a spade and enjoyed by all!  See the photos of our all of our fun activities.

Preschool learning through 'Messy Play'

The Preschool has been exploring a variety of sensory experiences that we like to call ‘Messy Play’  Together they have made ‘Clean Mud’, which is made from soap and tissue paper. They have also created ‘Wet Mud’ with soil and water.  Drawing in shaving cream sprayed onto a table top is also a favourite activity.

Through ‘Messy Play’ they have had experience and practise of small motor skills, language development and multi-sensory exploration.   Click here to see a slideshow of the children busily enjoying their ‘Messy Play’.

Music and Scarves

ps-30-09-09Using a set of colourful scarves created a multi-sensory treat for both the Preschooler and Junior Kindergarten classes last week.  They explored both colour and body movements as they enjoyed playing with the scarves while listening to music.  Watch a slideshow of them in action.

Preschool Dinosaur Dig!

ps-dinosaur-dig
Welcome to the Dinosaur Dig!  A celebration for father’s day honoring all the important men in a child’s life.  We began our gathering by giving these special men a “dinosaur dig hat” and their own large toy dinosaur.  The children then sang and acted out “The Dinosaur March” song.  They also performed their friend’s song in English, Spanish and silently to incorporate sign language.  We then had a dinosaur hunt where the fathers and their child went looking for hidden dinosaurs in the playground.  We concluded our party by giving a handmade bookmark with sentiments of love written on it!  Oh yes and of course a pizza to share!   Miss Evieann

Bounce-a-thon 2009

The Bounce-a-thon today was a great success with all of our Preschool, Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten children bouncing to help raise money for books, playground equipment and computers.  Each child bounced for one minute by themselves and their total bounces were recorded.  They then had five minutes with their friends to bounce together.  The children had a blast.  There were lots of smiles along with a wide variety of unique bouncing techniques.

There was also a healthy ‘Fruity Fun Bake Sale’ with delicious fruit kebabs, smoothies, lemonade and homemade baked goodies.

Again, we would like to extend a big thank you to all the families, friends, community supporters and other generous donators, together with the children themselves, for their enormous efforts.

Smoochie Smoothies Mother's Day

ps-mothers-day-1-08-05-09

A great time was had by the preschool children and their mums at the “Smoochie Smoothie Mother’s Day” event!  They started off their lovely celebration with the children singing two songs…”Friends, Friends 1,2,3, and “Way Up in the Sky”.  Then Miss Evieann read the story “Oh Baby, My Little One” as each child nestled into their mother’s lap.

ps-mothers-day-08-05-09

They continued their party offering strawberry and banana fruit smoothies that were shared with mother and child with two straws – delicious cookies were enjoyed as well!

After their tummies were full each child gave their mother a beach bag that they had decorated themselves as a gift for Mother’s Day.

A wonderful card was given to all the mums decorated with children’s “smooches” made with lipstick prints!

A very kissable and memorable time was had by all!

Preschool Pancake Breakfast

preschool-aqua

The Preschool children have been exploring the concept of food and learning about all its different varieties. Some of the questions we have focused on are… where does food come from… how do fruits and vegetables grow… what kinds of foods do we like, dislike, and how do we make food like cake, trail mix, soup etc…? The Pre-School has created a healthy foods cookbook which includes family recipes that each child enjoys to eat at home. These will be on sale at the school. Our food exploration was topped off with a Pancake Breakfast at Aqua restaurant. It was enjoyed by all – see us all in the photo above munching away! Many thanks to Joan and Clive for having us at their restaurant and also to all the parents who helped out to make this trip possible.

Creative Minds at Work

ps-cooking-04-03-09

The Early Years theme for Education Week is “The Creative Mind of the Child” and we aim to recognise the creative spark and imagination of each child by offering a variety of activities for them to explore.

Preschool have been cooking.  Their cooking recipe for Friendship Soup, allowed them to choose vegetables to bring from home in order to create the special soup together.  It was delicious!  They also created a strawberry cake for the bear in the story ‘The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and Big, Hungry Bear’. Everyone took turns to help.  Take a look at them busy decorating the cake in the slideshow.

We  have looked at the lifecycles of frogs and made our own sparkling ponds by painting paper plates.  There are lots of  great photos of us to see… [Read more…]
