Heritage Week: T.C.I. Colours…Do You Know Your Island Colours?

ps-national-heritage-week-oct-2016-4At the start of our Early Years National Heritage Week celebrations, the preschoolers faces’ lit up as they entered the door seeing rays of colourful scarves hanging up in their classroom. Some said, “I see a rainbow,” some called out their favourite colour,   while others simply enjoyed the feeling of wrapping themselves up in the soft hanging cloth.

Each colour is special to the Turks and Caicos.  The colours are on our National Costume.  Each colour represents one or more of the islands that make up our country and identifies what makes them special.  Do you know your Island colours?

Preschoolers enjoy exploring Nursery Rhymes

ps-nursery-rhymes-oct-2016-6Parents remember learning Nursery Rhymes when they were young with their mums and dads and now they find themselves doing the same with their children…

The Preschoolers have had a marvellous week exploring the theme of nursery rhymes, showing what a young child can learn when the environment is set and geared to independent and guided learning.

During the week, it was very interesting to watch the facial expressions and actions of the children as they recited, chanted, sung or acted out each rhyme.   The children were able to recognise each nursery rhyme with a corresponding picture card.  They quickly took possession of their favourite cards and enjoyed singing or chanting them – even choosing to do so during their free play.

Not an easy concept to grasp when you live on an island that is predominantly warm year round! However, to experience this cold phenomenon, we visited IGA Supermarket’s freezer room!

Creativity feeds creativity!

Year 1Pirate ships, rockets, teepees, mud pies and more…

Traditionally, each year the children contribute to our annual PTA fundraiser by creating pieces of artwork to be auctioned. This year they are especially excited to be involved as proceeds from this Saturday’s event at Mango Reef will go towards enhancing our school playground.

In collaboration with the PTA, we hope to build a magical playground brimming with opportunities for more imaginative and creative play.

To help make our dreams a reality, we would like to tap into our diverse community expertise and businesses as much as possible. PTA/School funds will be utilized to pay for these local supplies and services.

“We have great moms and we love them!”

ey-mothers-day-2016 (1)This theme was evident in all the Early Years classes last week as they prepared class festivities to celebrate the loving moms we have in our lives.

The Toddler class was everything purple from the decorations to the flowers, outfits and handmade cards. Moms were treated to songs by the children and yummy snacks. The Preschool focussed on the Dr. Seuss book, Are You My Mother? They did activities all week related to the book and shared some of them with their moms, such as, making a bird puppet, play dough nests and retelling the story with props.

Happy Earth Day from our Preschool Lorax Lovers!

ps-lorax-april-2016-(17)“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees….. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

The children have been enjoying books by Dr. Seuss as part of their topic, Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think. Last week we looked at the book, The Lorax. It is a perfect introduction to Earth Day and our local wildlife environmental week about turtles. We discussed several ways we can help take care of our Earth. The children may be little but it is never too early to make them aware of ways in which they can help take care of our environment. [Read more…]

Sharing learning experiences at home…

It’s turtle week at Provo Primary and so lovely to know that experiences and knowledge learnt at school are making the journey home to be shared with families. Here is one of our preschoolers entertaining family with a song she’s learnt this week…. “I had a little turtle”. Beautiful singing! Thanks for sharing.

Please remember to make time to come and view our turtle crafts display at pick-up time tomorrow together with your child

Our EYFS ‘STEM’ Showcase was a Wonderful Success

eyfs-stem-showcase-mar-2016 (1)Thank you to everyone who came along to our Early Years ‘STEM Learning’ Showcase last week.  I think the photos below show how much fun the children, families and teachers appeared to be having as they played, talked and learned together, exploring the wide range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths activities on offer.

We hope that the next time you see or hear the phrase ‘STEM’ you will think back to this event, confident in the knowledge of what it means, and also in knowing that, here at Provo Primary, your child is supported and fully encouraged to explore this through their everyday problem-solving and exploratory play.

Introducing Mat Man to Preschool

Mat Man has been introduced to the children through a song and with a picture of him. We have been looking at the different lines that make up Mat Man’s body, putting him together as we sing the song, taking him apart and putting him back together again. Mat Man is part of the Handwriting Without Tears programme. Mat Man does an important job in helping children learn about body awareness, taking turns, counting and eventually starting to draw a person correctly!

Preschool Shape Explorers

ps-shape-explorers-jan-2016-(24)The Preschool’s Topic, ‘It’s All About the Shapes’, has involved far more than learning just about the basic shapes, but rather exploring the world of ‘shape’.

First we went on a shape hunt around school as an introduction to the topic. Then we have investigated size, patterns, holes and tubes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed going outdoors to explore these concepts in further detail.

Take a journey of shape exploration through the eyes of our Preschool class…

Newsletters and Topic Maps – Spring 2016

topics-jan-2016Class newsletters and curriculum topic maps help you to keep in the loop and find out what is happening in your child’s class. Access important information, discover topics your child will be exploring and see how you can support your child’s learning at home.

Over the next week, look out for your child’s class newsletter and topic map in your email inbox or online here.

Our topics this term will take our children on learning journeys into story lands, exploring our senses, back in time to the world of the dinosaurs, the Ancient Egyptians, the Tudor age of exploration, conflict during World War 2 and out to space and into the future.  What an adventure well all be having!

Perhaps you have some knowledge, an interest or resources that will help to bring our class topics alive this term?  We love to hear from you if you do.

Tree Planting at Provo Primary for World Aids Day

ps-tree-planting-5-2015Trees were planted all around the Turks and Caicos yesterday to mark World Aids Day. Here at Provo Primary, our youngest students helped to plant a mahogany tree in the school playground.

The event was organised by the HIV Prevention Unit and DEMA to celebrate World Aids Day. Celebrations are often marked with the release of red balloons but, in the interest of caring for our environment, Lynn Robinson of Big Blue Ltd promoted the planting of trees instead. The native Mahogany was kindly donated from the nursery at DEMA.

Although the children were too young to understand the significance of the occasion, they were keen to share their knowledge of what trees need to grow and how we can care for them.

Over the years to come we look forward to watching both our children and the tree grow up healthy and strong. [Read more…]

Preschool look after the Puppies at Potcake Place

ps-potcake-place-nov-2015 (13)The Preschool children visited Potcake Place as a part of their “Beautiful TCI” topic. We arrived very excited and were greeted by the little barks of Potcake pups. Mrs. Jane shared a few ways to take care of puppies with us which were very similar to the ways our parents care for us!

In small groups, we were able to bathe and dry two Potcakes, Pluto and Daisy. The children were quite gentle and calm. Perhaps the highlight of our visit was watching four, two week old, puppies learn how to drink milk from a bowl and then being able to pet them. They were so sweet and cute. One started crying because he couldn’t find the bowl. Mrs. Jane gave us the task to come up with names for them. So far we have suggestions of Pluto, Orch, Red, Snowy, Doggie, Picka, Noodle and Moo!

Preschool Enjoy ‘The Gathering Drum’

ps-gathering-drum-oct-2015 (7)The Preschool class participated in an activity called ‘the gathering drum’ this week.  This exciting event involved tapping out simple repeated rhythms with finger tips, flat hands and thumbs.  They explored loud and quiet sounds and fast and slow rhythms. The activity involved listening carefully and following directions. Before playing their rhythms on the drum they practiced on their knees. They tried two types of rhythms, counting 1, 2; 1, 2 and then 1, 2 ,3; 1, 2, 3.  The children listened to I Wan’na Be Like You from the Jungle Book, feeling the ‘swing-type’ rhythm and then playing a faster rhythm.

Preschool Wash, Wash, Wash their Hands!

ps-handwashing-day-0ct-2015-(11)Thursday, 15th October was GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY.  The Preschool class had a fun-packed morning with a variety of activities emphasising the importance of ‘hand washing’.

We began our morning making bubbles outdoors using whisks and blowing through straws to make bubbles on our hand prints. We listened to the story ‘Germs Are Not for Sharing’ and did a ‘germs away’ experiment. For this experiment, we sprinkled black pepper in a bowl of water (the pepper represented germs). The pepper floated on top. In the centre of the bowl we added a few drops of dish washing soap and watched the soap ‘scare the germs away’

Making school to home connections with Mr. Bear!

ps-mr-bear-sept-2015 (4)A couple of weeks ago the Preschoolers came into the classroom after morning play outdoors. Sitting on a chair was a poorly looking little bear! He was covered in dirt, was holding a crumpled tissue and his leg was torn. The children immediately expressed concern for our new friend.

Mrs. Rachel picked him up gently and started asking the children a few questions. What happened to him? “He’s dirty,” said one child. “Look at his leg. It’s broken,” noticed another. Why does he have a tissue? “Oh, no! He’s crying” – sighed one girl sadly.  How is he feeling?   He’s sad” – thought one boy. [Read more…]

Parent guides to help you to support your child’s Maths learning.

calculation-policy-imageThese parent guides will help you to see the progression of a child’s understanding of number and calculations from the Early Years through to Year 6. They demonstrate the teaching stages of each of the 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They also include key vocabulary to support each method.
Each guide is designed to assist you with supporting your child at home with their Numeracy learning.  It is often the case that many methods and strategies taught today appear different from those previously used. All children will progress towards using the methods that many adults recognise from their own school days. We do, however, encourage all parents to support their child’s progress through the stages outlined in these parent guides, so that they gain a richer understanding of how complex calculations work. When at home, it is helpful if your child can practice the methods taught in school to ensure the strategies are reinforced effectively.

Preschool learning through outside play

ps-outdoor-play-april-2015-(16)We love to play outside! The green field is amazing! The children adore their daily trip to the green field and more recently have delighted in using more play equipment – learning to kick, throw, crawl under, jump over, run in a zigzag, race and use hula hoops!

Sports day was lots of fun – the children loved showing all their skills to their mums and dads.

One of our highlights this year has been playing with the parachute with Year 6 – you can tell by the children’s faces just how much fun they had.
