Year 1 learn about the Power of YET!

Year 1 read the book – ‘Bubble Gum Brain’ by Julia Cook and learned all about the Power of YET!

Do you have a bubble gum OR a brick brain when you approach something challenging? FIND OUT! It’s all about your mindset. This creative story teaches us the valuable lesson that ‘becoming’ is better than ‘being’, which can open the door to a whole new world of possibilities!

Happy New Mood of the Day

In Year 3 we have been picking a special ‘mood of the day’ card to remind us of how we can use our positive traits throughout the day. We pick a card and think of an action or a body pose that is connected to the ‘mood’ presented on the card. We have had so much fun moving our bodies into different shapes independently, in pairs then as a class. Can you guess which picture is related to which ‘mood card’?

Happy New Mood to you all!

You are what you eat!

Year 2 have ended their mid term topic of ‘Brains, Bodies and Bones’ by examining how to keep a healthy brain – a good nights sleep, hydration, exercise, less screen time and healthy eating all being the best ways in which to do this.

So how does healthy eating affect your brain? We knew that unhealthy foods could affect our concentration, our ability to focus and sometimes even our energy levels. So, we decided to put our knowledge to the test. We would investigate how eating unhealthy foods and healthy foods would impact us when completing different tasks.

Dive and delve deep into our Year 1 Dolphin Classroom

Our Year 1 Dolphins have been ‘dolphin dancing’ their way through the beginning of term learning all about their class animal through story, dance and crafty activities.

Our buzz word has been all things ‘Brains’ where we have been learning about mindfulness in our brains and bodies. Ask any of our Year 1s about the benefits of using our Pre Frontal Cortex and R.A.S. system and they will be sure to keep you informed.

Year 6 have the Vision to See… Believe… and Achieve!

Over the past few weeks in Year 6, we have been creating our own vision boards. A vision board is a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on a specific life goal. Literally, a vision board is any sort of on which you display images and words that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life.
Here are a few statements from the children in Iguana class about their understanding of visions boards and their purpose:

  • Vision boards display what we hope to achieve in our futures.
  • Our goals and targets are colourfully illustrated on paper or as 3D models.
  • We all hope that one day, in the near or far future, we will be able to think how much we have achieved and how our vision boards helped us.
  • The reason why we created vision boards is to show what we envision ourselves achieving.
  • We made them to showcase what we are going to accomplish.

In Year 6, we really hope that these vision boards allow us to take our ideas and goals to the next level by seeing exactly what it is that we want to achieve.

Who knew that something so simple could become such a superpower?

Each year, watching this inspirational video resonates powerfully with our students.

Our Year 2 class have just watched it for the first time and it has been a really effective way to help them understand what mindfulness means. The video has become the catalyst for Personal, Health, Social and Economic Education (PHSE) discussions and helped the children begin to understand and manage their emotions as they learn and play together. When they remember to ‘just breathe’, they can find the clarity to calmly solve problems, resolve conflicts, find compromise and build resilience.

Big Ted and Flamingo went to Sea…

Big Ted is so excited about you joining him for the ‘Global Cardboard Challenge’ tomorrow. In fact he and Flamingo couldn’t wait and got creative with some amazing friends!

Big Ted and the Flamingo went to sea, in a beautiful cardboard boat,

They took some honey, and plenty of money, wrapped up in a five-dollar note.

Big Ted looked up to the stars above, and sang to a small guitar,

“O lovely Flamingo! O Flamingo my love,

What a beautiful Flamingo you are, you are, you are!

What a beautiful Flamingo you are!”

Adapted from the poem ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’ by Edward Lear.

Our Global Cardboard Challenge Day is 2 sleeps away!

Inspired by Caine, we are getting ready for an afternoon of good old fashioned – no technology – imaginative, family fun!  3-6Pm – Sunday 29th Sept.

9-year-old Caine Monroy spent his summer vacation building an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store. The entire summer went by, and he never had a single customer. But Caine didn’t give up. Then, on the last day of summer, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick walked in by chance to buy an auto part for his car. Caine asked Nirvan to play, and, well,  Caine’s Arcade 2 to see what happened next…

A huge welcome to our new School Council – 2019-2020

Congratulations to our new Year 3 – 6 School Councillors for being chosen to represent your classes and your school. This time round we have 3 students from each class to share the responsibilities over the year. Thank you to everyone who put themselves forward for election. Once again, all the teachers commented on how well you represented yourselves, it takes courage as well as enthusiasm to present yourselves to the whole class – keeping that amygdala in check. Well done to all of you!

We have already been busy talking about adjusting the playtime schedule as well as revisiting and reminding us all about continuing to use metal and reusable cutlery and NO to STRAWS! Are we ready to reduce all single-use plastic?!

The first early ‘Dress Down Day’ was a success. You all donated a total of $335 – an outstanding amount of money that will all be donated to assist the people of the Bahamas who suffered during Hurricane Dorian. [Read more…]

Our Year 2 Ospreys are Working Together like Birds of a Feather

Our Year 2 Osprey Class are ‘working together like birds of a feather.’
See how our class animal, the osprey, helps us with our learning. Listen to our ‘Meet the Parts of our Brain’ song. We hope you enjoy our presentation.

What’s on your mind?

Year 2 have welcomed in the new school by learning all about their body and their brain. So, what exactly does the brain do? Well, you only have to wander through our classroom to find out! As a get to know you activity, we explored the endless possibilities of ‘What’s on your mind?’ What do we think about when we are imagining, thinking, day – dreaming…?

Then, through songs and videos, we began to learn about the different parts of the brain and how they help us to navigate our every day to day life.

Y3 are getting all fired up!

What a great way to start the new school year by looking into how our brains work, and how we can make it work even better for us!

To remind us that our brain sorts out all of our ‘thoughts, memories, actions and feelings’ we created our own model brains to share with you – take a look at the photos.

Did you know that our brain has over 86 billion ‘neurons’ that help us to connect our learning? When these connections are made, we call it ‘firing up’!

Growth Mindset for Students

Why is Mindfulness a Superpower?

Mindfulness is a bit of a buzzword… most people have heard of it, but many are confused about what mindfulness really means. In reality is simply means focusing your awareness on the present moment; calmly noticing your emotions and physical sensations without judgment as you are doing whatever you happen to be doing. You can be mindful as you do just about anything from sitting quietly and breathing, to drawing, cooking,  eating, or playing on the beach in the sand.

Collaborating with a leader in the field of Mindfulness

We were very fortunate to have Michael Apollo, lecturer in Mindfulness at The University of Toronto, join us via a Zoom meeting for a wonderful session on ‘Mindfulness for Teacher Resilience, Wellbeing and Communication’ during our Professional Development Teacher Training days this year.  We felt very inspired,  keen to incorporate mindful pauses into our busy days and excited to  share ideas he offered with our classes.

This was just an introduction to our year of working collaboratively with Michael.  Amazingly, he will join us on island in November to offer workshops for our teachers, students and parents.  Plan ahead and schedule time to be able to join us for his parent session at 1:30pm PM – 5:00 PM on Wednesday 6th November. You won’t want to miss this!

We are truly grateful that Michael Apollo will be working with Provo Primary and Middle School children, parents and teachers throughout the upcoming year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Deborah, John and Melissa Roy for their generosity in sponsoring this amazing initiative.

What is our Personal Growth, Growth Mindset and Mindfulness Curriculum all about?

Our Professional Development teacher training at the start of this year focused on the development of our Personal Growth, Growth Mindset, and Mindfulness Curriculum throughout the school.

We are excited to share a little more about this and why we believe it’s an important part of our students’ education. So what is Personal Growth, Growth Mindset and Mindfulness all about …
