Food For Thought Class Food Bank Drive

Through the help of our School Council, Provo Primary is taking part in a Class Food Bank Drive for the Food for Thought organisation.

As you may know, Food for Thought (as well as its Breakfast Programme) currently has a Food Bank Programme, in which ten of the government schools have Breakfast Boxes where students in need can go to get something to eat.

They provide instant oatmeal for 20 students per day at each of the ten schools. On top of this, they ask for public donations of other non-perishable breakfast items to keep the Breakfast Boxes topped up and full of variety.

They have come up with a new initiative in order to boost the public donations – a Class Food Bank Drive! And Provo Primary is happy to support this.  Click on to find out how we can help [Read more…]

‘Rocky the Rock Iguana’ visits Provo Primary

It’s not every day that an iguana visits your school, but today it really did happen!  ‘Rocky the Rock Iguana’ came to Provo Primary, together with Dr. Higgs from the National Trust, to tell us all about the recently launched ‘Saving the Iguana Islands’ project.

We learnt that rats and cats can be a threat to the iguana populations, and that the project is working hard to keep them away from areas where the iguanas are living.   We also learnt about how we should behave around iguanas, when we see them, by being quiet and not feeding or chasing them.

It was lots of fun to meet ‘Rocky the Rock Iguana’ – he rocks! Having our class photos taken with him was really special.

We felt very lucky that ‘Rocky’ and Dr. Higgs came to visit us during our special Iguana Week.  Thank you!  We will do our best to remember all the important information they shared with us and share this with everyone we know.

It’s ‘IGUANA WEEK’ here at Provo Primary!

Our ‘Iguana Week’ kicked off to a great start this morning with an informative visit from Amy Avenant from the DECR.  Speaking to all our children from Junior Kindergarten to Year 6, she explained why our iguanas are so special to our islands and why we need to protect them.  Thank you, Amy.

Did you know that rock iguanas found here are endemic to the Turks and Caicos Islands, which means that they are found nowhere else in the world. How special is that!  If you would like to learn more facts about our iguanas, then come and ask any of our children. You can also find out more at this website and, even better, plan a visit to Little Water Cay and see them first hand!

Throughout this week we’ll be learning even more about our iguanas and comparing them to others around the world. We certain should be experts by the end of the week!

Weston Cup Soccer Tournament

The Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association had 4 youth teams participate in the Weston Cup soccer tournament in Florida, USA over the weekend of February 17th – 19th.  The tournament hosts approximately 700 teams from the USA, Canada, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.  The under 10 boys team and under 11 girls team had several Provo Primary students on their rosters, and the under 12 and 13 boys teams had several former Provo Primary students included.  There was also a large number of Provo Primary parents filling the roles of coach and manager!

All of the teams were very successful and improved on their results from the 2017 Weston Cup.  The under 10 and 12 boys both made the finals and finished 2nd in their divisions.  Great job by everyone involved!  Contributed by Jen.

Santa brings gifts for all

Dear Santa!  Thank you for coming to visit us on our last day of term today at Provo Primary School:

Thank you to the Fire Service for helping Santa to get to our school.

The fire truck was big and red, just like your sleigh

The truck made a big noise.

I hope you weren’t too hot in your suit and boots.

Your beard was as white as snow and tickled.

I love the present that you gave me.  It was a book.  Thank you.

Thank you for the candy cane.

I hope you have a safe journey back to the North Pole.

Love from all the children at PPS.

Three cheers to our Year 2 parents too for baking goodies and offering refreshments for Santa, teachers, guests and onlookers throughout the morning.

On behalf of all the staff at Provo Primary, we would like to thank everyone for all their support this term, for their kind best wishes, cards and thoughtful gifts.

In return we wish everyone a happy holiday season with all your friends and family.  See you next year!

Jingle Jam was a jingle of fun

Santa 🎅🏻 Selfie at The Jingle Jam! What a fabulous turn out! So much festive cheer, and lovely to see all the little ones having such a jolly good time. Thank you so much to everyone that helps me to make this possible every year! 🎁

Kate Burchill

Santa delivers some special books to our friends on South.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who donated books for our Pen Pal Schools on South Caicos, Calvery Christian School and Iris Stubbs Primary School. Altogether we donated 12 big boxes of books – the kindness of our children is quite overwhelming.

Earlier today, Santa flew over to South with his two elf helpers from Year 5, Miss Laranda and PPPA rep, Kelsey, to deliver the books. Looking at the first photo we’ve seen, it certainly looks like it has been a fun time.  We look forward to seeing more photos and hearing more news about their special delivery on their return!

We decided to collect books when we were sad to hear that many of the schools’ books had been damaged by the Hurricanes.  The children looked on their own bookshelves and choose books that they had enjoyed that they thought others would too.

Thank you everyone.  Thank you Santa for taking time out of your busy pre-Christmas preparations to help us, and thank you to Sail Rock for helping us with transporting everyone, and all the boxes, over to South.

Hooray… it’s the Jingle Jam Tomorrow!

It’s the Jingle Jam tomorrow, Wednesday 6th December from 5-7pm.  Join us at Provo Primary for a parent and toddler – Kindergarten aged friendly Christmas Party – older siblings are of course welcome!

Tickets: $5 per person (under 1 yr goes free!)

Community friends are more than welcome to come along!

The evening kicks off the festive season with a toddler friendly dance party, Christmas crafts station, mulled wine, mince pies and a visit with Santa himself!  It’s the perfect opportunity for a relaxed family photo with the jolly old guy and we will have a professional photographer there to snap away – your holiday photos will be sent to you free of charge – just remember to write your email on the back of your ticket!

Please contact Katherine Burchill if you would like to help with any last minute organisation. [Read more…]

Forging Friendships with Schools on South Caicos

Recently, we the Provo Primary School School Council had a super smashing time in South Caicos. The main purpose of our trip was to visit two schools that had been hit quite hard by Hurricanes Irma and Maria – The Calvary Christian School and The Iris Stubbs Primary School.

At school, we had been shown photos of the devastation that had occurred to the classrooms and school buildings. Having seen the damage, we wanted to help in some way.

We wanted to connect with the children and offer a hand of friendship from one school to another.  So, it was decided that we would start a penpal outreach programme with the two schools.

Year 4 Participate in Reef Conservation

Last week, Flamingo Class were lucky to receive an invitation from our friends at Amanyara’s Nature Discovery Center – to contribute towards a Reef Conservation project!

Over the past few years, over 450 reef balls have been placed in the ocean by Amanyara. This new reef is situated in the Northwest Point National Park. More recently, coral has been added to these reef balls in order to preserve the delicate habitats of the area.

Children were treated to a guided snorkeling tour of the new reef by Discovery Center manager, Jackie Walker. We saw a wide range of coral that is now successfully living and growing in its new habitat. We learned to observe and identify Elk Horn, Mustard Hill and Finger coral.

Finally, Jackie took us to the Center’s underwater ocean coral nursery. We watched her identify and prepare a piece of Finger coral to plant on behalf of Providenciales Primary School. Thanks to a piece of special purple ‘putty,’ our little Finger coral is now held in place on a reef ball off the shore of Amanyara Resort. Not a bad place to spend its days!

New Jingle Jam funded resources bring big smiles and splashes in our EY

Thank you to all our Early Years’ Jingle Jammers!  Our festive bonanza, ‘Jingle Jam’ was a fun event for our younger children and families back in December and generated a whopping $1,101 to go towards teaching and learning equipment for our Early Years Unit.

Well, we are very pleased to report that our new resources have arrived and are already making a ‘splash’ and being enjoyed by our younger students!  Here are some photos of our amazing new ‘Water Wall’ and new replacement ‘Caterpillar’.  It was lovely to hear and see the children’s excitement when they saw these new resources for the first time. They are both great additions to our playground area – I think the children’s faces and focused involvement in the photos demonstrates this clearly. [Read more…]

World Book Day: 2017 – ‘A Storytelling Evening’

world-book-day-2017

This upcoming week, World Book Day, the annual celebration of books and reading for children and young people, celebrates its 20th anniversary on Thursday 2nd March 2017.  As usual, we plan to have a fun-packed day of literature enjoyment:

Book Character Dress Up (Whole School):

All the children throughout the school are encouraged to come dressed like one of their favourite book characters. It always great fun to see everyone dressed up in their creative, homemade costumes and to appreciate the wide range of books enjoyed across the school.

School Council Book Swap (Whole School):

Bring in a book (or 2 or 3) and swop it for a different book. Bring books in from Monday onwards (Wednesday the latest) and give them to your teacher.  You’ll get to choose your new book on Thursday.

Visit from British West Indies Collegiate School (Years 1-6)

Students from the BWIC will be coming to perform some story dramas and to read to us.  We have enjoyed this connection on World Book Day for a few years and it has become a much-loved part of our celebrations.

Storytelling Evening (Whole School) 5:00-600pm.

We are once again very excited to be hosting ‘A Storytelling Evening’. David Bowen has kindly offered to start the evening off by sharing an ‘Anansi the Spider’ folktale on the stage.  After this, teachers/other adults will be reading stories in the classrooms and around the school.  Let your child’s teacher know if you would like to read a story.  The children are encouraged to come dressed in their PJs and to bring along their favourite night time cuddly toy companion and a comfy pillow or blanket.  The PTA has offered to provide cookies and milk to add to the evening’s bedtime story time atmosphere.

Provo Primary hosts a presentation on ‘Play and Learning in Early Childhood’

A valuable presentation that we encourage all Early Years parents to take the time to attend:

Come and discover the value of play

Monday February 27th 2017

5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Provo Primary School

Community friends are welcome to join us.

Visiting presenter: Nicola Williams, ECE, BEd, MEd, PhD Candidate.

Nicola’s children attended Provo Primary for many years and she also taught here herself.  She is very excited to return to the school again!

Thank you from our PTA

Thank you to everyone who supported our recent PTA St Valentine’s Bake Sale and Family Skate Night.

The baked treats and pink lemonade were eye-catching, delicious and plentiful – what a lovely yummy choice we had! A BIG thank you to all our talented bakers, our time-giving sellers and to everyone who took the opportunity to indulge.  A tasty way to celebrate an early St Valentine’s Day.

The Family Skate Night was a ‘whizzing’ success with Provo Primary families and community friends having an exciting evening of skating fun and games.  A HUGE thank you to all our PTA helpers who organised the event, manned the refreshments and lead the puck shoot games.  It was great to see so many families rolling, turning, gliding and dancing around the rink together to the hit sounds provided by DJ Dayoh.

Thank you, everyone!

Year Four Visit the Hospital

The culmination of our recent topic on Moving and Growing involved a trip to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre to find out about how a patient with injured bones or muscles would be treated. Children were given an all-access tour of the facilities relating to patient care – starting at the phlebotomy department, through the micro biology labs, into the physiotherapy treatment rooms and finally to the x-ray department. In each area, children were taught about how broken bones are tested, treated and rehabilitated.

We were fortunate to have the expertise of Nurse Moira to lead us through each area and a host of other hospital workers who shared their knowledge with us.

Leo and the Big Heart

Thank you so much to Jeff and Ginny for entertaining us today with a special valentine puppet show about friendship, sportsmanship, and forgiveness.

The cast of characters included Rudy and Risky Rabbit, Leo the Lion, and a nasty witch with a mean green face!  The show took place in the “Friendly Forest” as Rudy and Risky were getting ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day.  Wanting to play a game and needing another friend to join them, they asked Leo and that’s when the trouble started…!

We also learnt and sang some special love and friendship songs together.

Keen puppeteers, Jeff and Ginny were Founders and Directors of the Sundance School located in New Jersey for nearly 40 years.  Visiting Provo, it was very kind of them to bring down their puppets to share their story with us all.  The photos of the children’s faces as they watched will clearly show you just how much they all enjoyed the show.  It was lovely to the children entranced and to hear them giggle and laugh at the humour.   A wonderful show.  A huge thank you to our new, big-hearted, friends, Ginny and Jeff. We hope to see you again another time, soon.
