Vehicles that help in the Community

The Preschoolers were very excited as the reality of listening to stories, role-playing, singing songs about different forms of transportation came to life when the fire truck and the ambulance came to visit the school.

All the children were happy to climb inside the fire truck and look out, try on the hat and some even were bold enough to step into the boots.  They were a little nervous, but excited, by the loud sound of the sirens from both vehicles but loved every moment of it even if it meant covering their ears for a second or two.

The highlights of the morning were the children using the water hose that the firefighters use to extinguish a fire.

The firefighters really enjoyed showing the children inside and outside the truck and seemed well educated in how to address our younger children (one of them was so brilliant that I said he will be our teacher on call!).

Let’s spread a little kindness on World Mental Health Day

What’s it all about?

World Mental Health Day 2018 is observed on October 10. This day is meant to raise awareness about importance of mental health of individuals across the world.

We’ve all known someone going through a tough time, whether it’s a big change such as moving home or school, a relationship breaking down,
or coping with the loss of a loved one.
At these times it can be hard to know what to do to help, especially where children are involved. It may sound simple but we know that small acts of kindness can make all the difference. Plus did you know studies show that being kind can make you happier and less stressed?
As teachers, parents and carers, we have a very important role to play in helping children learn the value of kindness. Here are a few simple ways to encourage your child to spread a little kindness today, and beyond…

World Teachers’ Day 2018

“The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher,” (theme for World Teachers’ Day 2018 International Conference)

The Ministry of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services, joins the global community in observing World Teachers’ Day 2018.  Happy World Teachers’ Day!

World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. It also commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 signature of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

The Minister of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services, Honorable Karen Malcolm, and her team at the Ministry take this opportunity to celebrate with and express gratitude to each teacher in the archipelago for their dedication and commitment to the education of our children. [Read more…]

World Food Day Poster Competition and Food For Thought Food Drive

In recognition of World Food Day, October 16th, Food for Thought is asking all the school children of Providenciales, from age 5-19, to use their imagination to create a poster that illustrates their idea of Zero Hunger.

In order to enter the contest, the poster must be submitted by October 12th. The students would need to include their name, name of their school and their age. The winners will be announced on World Food Day, October 16th and receive a lovely prize from Food for Thought!  Some classes may be doing the poster in class, others may have it set for homework.  Families are encouraged to check out class noticeboards or to ask their child’s teacher for details.

In addition, the winners will also have the opportunity to participate in the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) World Poster Contest, which will be announcing their winner in December. They would be promoted by FAO offices around the world and receive a surprise gift bag and Certificate of Recognition if they are selected. They will also be featured in an exhibition at FAO headquarters in Rome.

Prior to World Food Day, Food For Thought will also be holding a large food drive for the families in need in Providenciales. Please look out for details on when to bring donations into school from our School Council, who will be helping to co-ordinate the collection.

This is the Week of the Young Child

Following our National Youth Week celebrations last week, the first week of October here in the Turks and Caicos is always dedicated to focusing on our very youngest youth members.  With the theme of “Early Childhood Education The Foundation to a Bright Start” we are excited to join in with a selection of the planned events that will take place in Early Years centres across the islands.

Take a look at the poster and look out for activities being explored in our Early Years classes this week.

It’s National Heritage Month – Oct 2018

It’s National Heritage Month here in the Turks and Caicos.

The Ministry of Education, Youth, Culture and Library Services invites you to join us in celebrating encouraging  friends and neighbours to come out and be a part of the month –long activities. Click on the image left to see what’s happening in each island.

National Heritage Month is a time in which we wholeheartedly observe and celebrate the rich cultural history of our country. It is through our celebrations that we recognise the work done by our forefathers, and the rich legacies they have left for our enjoyment.

As we celebrate, we ask that we each reflect on our level of patriotism to this beautiful country; the role each citizen must play in making this a safer place in which to live, and the steps that are to be taken to make the TCI a more unified country.

Look out for further details this week on our National Heritage Celebration Assembly on the afternoon of Friday 5th October – time to be decided.

Everyone is invited to join us as our Years 3-6 honour our national song, tales and dances.   We hope you’ll be able to join us for the celebrations!

As always, do let us know if you are willing to come in and share a heritage related activity with the children during this month.

Happy 50th Birthday Letterland!

As lots of you know, Year 1 LOOOOOOOOVE Letterland!  We have embraced EVERYTHING Letterland…including our Christmas Show last year.  In case you didn’t hear about it, we performed a story about how Red Robot tried to ruin the Letterland Christmas show by stealing all the character’s props!

The Year 1’s continue to talk about the Christmas Show, often referring to the letter they played and the costumes they wore.  Sooooooo, when we heard it was Letterland’s 50th birthday, we knew we had to join in the celebrations.

People all over the world have been invited to send in videos of themselves singing ‘Happy Birthday’…well…we thought it would be lovely to go down to Grace Bay Beach here in the Turks and Caicos and do a little performance.  What could be better than the backdrop of the Number 1 beach in the world*?

Provo Primary parents claim silverware!

Providenciales Primary & Middle School recently competed in the TCIFA’s 7v7 Corporate Challenge, supporting youth soccer in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and were proud to claim the runner-up trophy.

Yet, this was a team with a difference. Instead of parents cheering on their children, this event gave our Provo Primary parents and friends a chance to run out and compete!

The team fought hard in a series of tight games through hot summer weather, tight group games, penalty shoot outs and extra time, eventually claiming a spot in the final against the TCI Police Force. Despite our eventual defeat, it proved to be a wonderful morning of fun, camaraderie and effort.

Many thanks to the Provo Primary parents and friends who signed up for the event – we look forward to going one step further in next year’s competition!

Thanks to all our Clean-up Volunteers!

A HUGE thank you to the amazing efforts of our Provo Primary families and friends who supported our ‘International Coastal Clean-up Day’ participation this morning.  Cleaning up the road from the TCIFA Soccer Field to the CARIFTA Stadium, was a crowd of hard-working volunteers (inc 25 students from our Yrs 1 to 7). This photo shows some of the team and a portion of the rubbish collected.

The area had been brought to my attention as in desperate need for a clean up by our Years 3-6 students who travel the route to the stadium for their P.E. lessons.  With vast amounts of rubbish collected, I trust that due to their actions, their journey will be noticeably cleaner (and for others and the wildlife too!).

With a knowledge that we all have the ability to take action and to make a difference, it was interesting to hear the children’s ideas on how we could help to discourage the littering in the area – I wonder what you think could help?

Provo Public Library Summer Competition

The Providenciales Public Library will once again be hosting its annual Read-a-thon from July 9-14, 2018 under the theme “Read to Succeed”. The aim of this competition is to promote the habit of reading whilst exposing the children to a wide variety of books.

Since its inception, this competition has generated a fair amount of interest among the children and so they are not expecting anything less this year. The format has undergone a slight adjustment to make it a little more interesting and no doubt the children will embrace this.

You need to be a member of the library, so if you’re not… now is the time to join!

‘NO TO STRAWS’ Cards

Year 3 are leading the way, creating some ‘NO TO STRAWS’ cards to help remind everyone to join the DECR  ‘WE SAY NO TO STRAWS’ campaign.  The idea is for them to take the cards out with them when their family is dining out, helping them to specifically ask for no straws when ordering their drinks.

With permission of the venue, we hope to make a collection of photographs of the children with their straw-less drinks.  Many local restaurants are already joining in with the campaign and perhaps our cards and photos will encourage more and more to consider following suit.  Please send in the photos to principal@provolearning.com

The Year 3s have also made cards to be placed into their lunch boxes to help them remember not to bring straws to school.

This campaign is to create awareness of our beautiful marine environment and how we can take small actions each day to conserve and protect it!  No Straw is a simple choice that can make a big difference. [Read more…]

Supporting the ‘WE SAY NO TO STRAWS’ campaign

This year’s Earth Day (22nd April) was the kick off for the DECR ‘WE SAY NO TO STRAWS’ campaign and Provo Primary is in full support.

Through encouragement from our School Council, we have taken on the challenge to try not bring any straws into school, especially those attached to juice cartons. The straws that have been bought in are being recycled and used during art and craft sessions – a great idea from our Year 6!

We have also managed to encourage everyone to recycle and/or use metal cutlery during our eating times at school.

Look out for further blogs this week about our ‘No Straw’ mission.
