Terrific effort in our ‘Bear Hunt’ and ‘Body and Brain Triathlon’ activities

CONGRATULATIONS to every child for their great efforts in our recent “Bear Hunt” and Body and Brain Triathlon challenges.  Throughout the school, the children participated with enthusiasm, energy and mental prowess.

WELL DONE to the teachers for organising and supervising the various activities and to Mr. Toby and our Year 7s for helping to marshal the ‘biking, skating, scootering, running and walking’ challenge.

THANK YOU to all the kind family and community sponsors who have supported the children’s efforts to help raise funds for learning resources which they themselves will benefit from.

And finally, to all the parents who brought bike and scooters to school and to everyone who was able to come along and encourage the children with claps and cheers, your support was MUCH APPRECIATED.

South Caicos School of Field Studies visit

Ahead of our upcoming local animal themed ‘Dolphin Week’, it was great that on Wednesday, the School of Field Studies (SFS) from South Caicos came in to teach and tell us all about them. There were all different types of activities for different personalities, soccer for active people, trivia with rewards for those with a sweet tooth, origami for crafty types and clay modelling and swimming in water for experimental, scientific types.

Two of one of the Year 5’s favourite activities were marine animal trivia and four corners. The four corners was based on dolphins echo-location. The children also had to identify dolphins by their significant tail features, observing closely markings, scars and curves. [Read more…]

National Education Week – 3rd – 8th March 2019

National Education Week here in the Turks and Caicos will be observed between 3rd – 8th March 2019 under the theme, “Quality Education for Lifelong Learners”. Click on to see how we will be celebrating Education Week a Provo Primary and Middle School.

This year’s theme song for Education Week, Quality Education for All (QEfA)  is written by the Long Bay High School Team – a catchy tune with a great message! Here are the lyrics if you would like to sing along.

Education Week was established more than 29 years ago to call attention to the importance of education and to showcase the talents of TCI teachers and students. During the week, schools throughout the country will host a myriad of activities and the general public is encouraged to join in unity with educators and students in support of the theme.

9 of our Soccer Superstars head to Florida representing the TCI

Wishing all the best and good luck to all nine of our Provo Primary and Middle School soccer players who are heading to the Weston Cup Tournament in Florida tomorrow as members of the TCIFA teams.

Being a small country with a small pool of players, the TCIFA rely greatly on these tournaments to assist in the development of their players. These tournaments provide an opportunity for our young players to compete at a very high level in various age group games and we fully support our students participation.

As the largest Youth Football tournament in Florida and one of the biggest in the United States, the Weston Cup is one of the premier football tournaments in the United States attracting from teams within and outside the United States. This includes teams from countries such as Brazil, Canada, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Today is Safer Internet Day – 2019 – how you will help to create a kinder online community?

Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity to talk to your family and friends about the safe, responsible and positive use of technology, and to pledge how you will help to create a kinder online community.

What we’ll be doing at school… Celebrating Safer Internet Day today, children across our primary and middle school will be taking part in lessons which aim to help young people understand how to keep themselves and others safe and happy online.  Plan to stay a few minutes at pick up today to see some of the activities they’ve been engaged in. We are also arranging for a community police person from the TCIPF to come and talk with our older students this week, as part of their countrywide online safety tour.

What you can do at home… To help you talk to your children at home about having a positive and safe time online, here is a link to some resources for parents and carers, including conversation starters, a fact-sheet, a family pledge card, videos and more!  Or simply try helping your children develop four critical skills – the 4Rs of online safety:

  • Respect– I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated
  • Responsibility – I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong
  • Reasoning – I question what is real
  • Resilience – I get back up from tough situations

Latest research – Giving and receiving consent in an online context… For Safer Internet Day 2019, the UK Safer Internet Centre has launched a report into young people’s experiences of asking for, giving and receiving consent in an online context.  Read a quick summary of the research here. Santa visits bringing gifts of books for all

A HUGE thank you to the fire service for once again bringing Santa to our school, laden with sacks of books for all the children throughout the school.  What a joy to see the smiles on all the children’s faces as each received their gift and got their own special time to sit and chat with Santa.  A lovely way to bring an end to our busy term.

Thank you, Santa!

A big thank you to our elf helpers, including many of our alumni students, to the PPPA for our Turkberry treat and to our Year 3 parents for the much appreciated morning coffee and goodies

Santa in the Streets – Spreading the Happiness!

A HUGE thank you to ALL of you who participated and bought gifts in for the ‘Santa in the Streets’ event. It was so, so wonderful to see all of your generous donations taking over the stage area; Santa was getting surrounded by your kind and generous offerings.

The School Council assisted Santa in the important task of distributing your gifts to all the children at the ‘Ashley Learning Centre’ and the ‘Oseta Jolly’ School during this final week of school.

The School Council were AMAZING! They not only assisted Santa in giving out the gifts, they also helped with packing boxes, sorting gifts, organizing the books AND gave out food and drinks all the children. The parents – Kristen and Joan, and I were truly proud of how the School Council went ‘above and beyond’ their call of duty and responded to each task with care, kindness and hard work – what a fantastic attitude to have. Councillors, you were marvelous!

A Jingly Jangly Thank You

A great BIG THANK YOU to everyone that attended this years Jingle Jam at Provo Primary School! We had a record turn out and made a fabulous profit that all goes directly back into the Early Years to be spent at the end of the year on extra special goodies to enhance each Child’s fun and learning at school! We couldn’t do it each year with out the amazing help from all the mums and dads of the Early Years and beyond, whether you donated decorations, baked some Christmas treats, did a shift on the bar, simply attended and ate your fair share of mince pies or were part of the truly dedicated team of mums that put the whole event together this year – THANK YOU from myself and from all the kids who will benefit from your Christmas giving spirit! MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone! Cant wait to see you all next year!

Kind regards, Kate Burchill

Provo Middle School Celebrate the TCI Salt Industry in Art!

Year 7 students of Provo Middle School participated in the Provo Arts & Craft Expo, sharing their learning about the TCI Salt Industry in the process.

In their Design & Technology lessons, students were challenged to create a range of products that were inspired by the TCI’s salt raker heritage. Students arrived at the Arts & Craft Expo ready to sell a wide range of items in order to raise funds for our end of year field trip to upstate New York. We had everything! From cards and calendars, to salt shakers and Christmas ornaments – Year 7 produced real diversity in their ideas and designs.

Students worked their stall throughout the weekend, introducing themselves to customers and explaining our learning journey this term. All products were well received and many happy customers walked away from our stall with handfuls of salt-inspired items.

We were especially pleased to be selling products sent to us by Ms Cynthia of Salt Cay Salt Works, with whom we visited on our field trip to Salt Cay in October. We also sold specially-made soaps that were produced by Ms Arlene of Island Organics. We loved seeing how these two businesses continue to use natural TCI salt in their products.

After a very successful weekend selling, children will now evaluate their products and discover whether they were able to make a profit from each item they designed. Judging by the reaction of one customer, who claimed “this stall is the most fun at the whole fair!”, children will have some very positive evaluations to write!

None of us can wait for our end-of-year field trip next June – we are certainly one step closer after this weekend!

Great Effort in Primary & Middle School Swim Meet

Students from Provo Primary & Middle Schools participated with great skill, perseverance and stamina this week – with some taking part in a developmental swim meet for the first time. Hosted by the International School of the TCI, the meet gave a total of 20 children the opportunity to compete.

Children participated in two-length races in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. All students set good times that can be used to track their own development in the future. A number of children found themselves paired in tight contests throughout the morning; competing in extremely close races against other students in the pool. It was a pleasure to see our children facing a new challenge with such determination and a positive attitude!

The event finished with two 4×2 length relays and a fun whole-team race at the end.

Very well done to our eight Provo Primary & Middle School swimmers! We look forward to the next opportunity to compete in the pool.

Year 6 engage in Tourism Awareness Month in the TCI

Tuesday, November 13th was a somewhat different day for our Year 6 class.  The usual routines of their typical Tuesday were abandoned as they headed off to the TCI Community College.  As you are probably aware, November is celebrated as Tourism Awareness Month in the Turks and Caicos Islands; and the Community College operated a series of different workshops in order to celebrate and recognise the importance of tourism to our country.

The theme, Embracing Cultures, allowed our Year 6 students to celebrate the diverse range of cultures present in the TCI; and to consider how this diverse population is essential to continued and improved tourist experiences.  Presentations, stories, music, dance and food ensured that the day was entertaining, informative and filling.

Middle School Official Opening Ceremony and Open House

We would like to thank all of you who were able to attend our Middle School Official Opening Ceremony and Open House last Monday; it was wonderful to see so much interest and support.

For those of you unable to attend, the evening opened with Ms. Alison welcoming Honorable Malcolm, Minister of Education and Mr. Bowen, Education Officer for Private Schools and other guests, including parents and children of Provo Primary and Middle School.

She went on to talk about her commitment to offering a Middle School Educational learning experience like Provo Primary, that was meaningful, fun, and a place where children felt inspired to learn, where individual passions and talents were recognized, and where children were encouraged to express themselves in creative and imaginative ways.

“With the emergence of Artificial Intelligence, we need to be challenging the next generation of children to question, problem solve and think creatively. Above all, children need to be compassionate and caring and learn to work collaboratively, if they are to begin to solve larger world problems.” [Read more…]

Happy World Kindness Day

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

November 13 is World Kindness Day. It is a day dedicated to promoting and celebrating kindness in all the different ways we can.  It’s a reminder to show one another how much we care.

Reflect on the kindness you have experienced in your life and what that has meant to you, or how it has shaped you. How will you pay that kindness forward?

‘Throw-back Thursday’ and Tourism Environmental Awareness Month

With the launch of November as Tourism Environmental Awareness Month, under the theme: “Tourism is Key… It Starts with ME,” ‘Throw back Thursday’ takes us back 6 years to November 2012.  Our then Year 4s felt that the issue of littering on our beaches was an environmental and tourist-impacting pollution that they all felt strongly about – so much so in fact, that they set about creating some protest photography to raise awareness on the subject.  Read their story here.

How do our Year 4 photographs make you feel?

Litter education has positive effects on changing student attitudes and behaviours toward littering because it instills a positive cultural value and norm for how we treat our environment. (Hartley et al., 2015, Oliver et al., 1985).

Reflecting on the many, many environmental activities over the years that we have engaged in here at Provo Primary School,  it would be interesting to hear how those same children, now 14 and 15 years old, feel about this subject today, along with our countless other Provo Primary alumni.

How has this education, alongside family values, for example, impacted their attitudes and behaviours towards littering today? And what of others growing up in the TCI who have been a part of similar programmes.

What do our youth and young people think about littering and how do they feel it affects tourism?

Thank you for making our Halloween party so fa-boo-lous!

What a spook-tacular Trick or Treat and Halloween party we enjoyed last night at Provo Primary and Middle School. A wonderful community event with families from across the island dressing up and joining in with the fun.

A HUGE thank you to our team of AMAZING parents who organised and helped out with everything – from decorations, candy supplies, food, drinks, photos and music, to our FANTASTIC Year 6s who did a great job running all the entertaining games, to Year 7 and friends for making the Haunted House such a THRILLING place to visit and to all the Flamingo Park residents who kindly joined in with the Trick or Treating.

The school looked amazing and it was wonderful to see so many children having fun in their costumes, enjoying the games and playing together. The smiles, the joyful play and the wonderful friendly nature between them all made the evening such a delight!

A night to remember! Hats off to the clean up crew too. Well done everyone – a successful night thanks to all your team effort and support. Until next year…!
