A whole new experience, Halloween underwater!

turksandcaicos_3093-450x300Last Thursday Brilliant by Tropical Imaging took Halloween photos for charity, as they do every year, here at our Provo Primary School PTA Halloween Party.  After the event, they asked some of the children if they wanted to celebrate Halloween one more time but this time underwater…

Another Spooky & Spectacular Halloween Party!

pta-halloween-night-oct-2013Making the front page of the TCI Weekly News for the 2nd year running, the Provo Primary PTA’s annual Halloween party was a smash hit once again as tribes of ninja’s, groups of Goths and all manner of vampires, witches and zombies invaded the school campus for 2 hours of post-trick or treating fun.

While the spider-web and light encased dance floor proved popular with the younger set, the TCI Middle Schoolers kept other attendees busy with a variety of games including “pin the nose on the pumpkin”, bobbing for apples, pumpkin bowling and spooky darts.  Parents got in on the action as well with costumes that rivalled their children’s’ get-ups…a trio of colourful crayons was seen on premises, and Cleopatra and King Tut also made the scene.

A huge, huge thank you to…

Provo Primary Golf Club a Smash Ht!

golf-club-oct-2013 During September and October the Provo Primary Golf Club was in full swing! Eight pupils were welcomed by our friends at Provo Golf Club for a fantastic five-week golf clinic that aimed to help them with all parts of their game. From chipping contests to putting challenges, longest drive competitions and straight shooting matches, our Golf Club had it all!

Children were able to learn the basics of the game on the beautiful practice greens and driving range, and were even able to get out onto the course to test their long game on a real fairway.

In our final session children used their new-found skills in a hotly-contested competition. Pupils realised that a smooth swing is only part of the recipe needed for a good golf game! In our “Cool as a Cucumber” challenge, children learned that a calm and focused mind was just as important as the club in their hands.

A huge congratulations goes out to all of our young golfers, as well as an even bigger thank you for our enthusiastic parent volunteers.  And finally a  giant thank you to Dave Douglas and the Provo Golf Club.

We hope to swing back into action in the summer! FORE!

10th Anniversary Location Celebrations

Provo Primary’s Logo is a Pink Flamingo. In ancient Egypt, flamingos were symbols of the sun. Flamingos also symbolize beauty, balance and grace. We believe that Provo Primary Flamingos are sunny, beautiful, graceful and balanced, who with their beautiful plumage, attract attention wherever they go.
Our little student flamingos certainly attracted attention and made us very proud yesterday as they captivated the audience with their performances depicting Provo Primary’s evolution and Pink Flamingo; their rendition of “I Believe I Can Fly’’; celebrations of our surrounding sporting facilities; and in thanking our community members for their assistance with sports. New P.E. Equipment To Help Further Promote Healthy Lifestyle Choices.

new-pe-equipment-sept-2013Last year, after-school rugby and soccer clubs run by community and parent volunteers raised $1210 to further supplement our school P.E. equipment.   Thank you Jamie, Jen, Zoe and Janine for your time and efforts over the year.  The clubs were well supported and enjoyed by the children.  The PTA also helped us to purchase a field hockey set.   Thank you everyone.

All the new resources will enable us to continue to broaden our P.E. curriculum throughout the school, by offering a wide range of sports to appeal to different interests of our children.  They will also help us to  promote and instil a love of P.E. and the desire to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Following the success of the introduction of  handball last year to our invasion game units, we are excited this year to introduce field hockey and beach soccer.  Last year we also introduced squash to our net/wall game units and this was very popular with the children.

Read on to see all the new equipment we have brought…

beach-clean-up-sept-2013 Take the pledge to help turn the tide on ocean trash – mark your calendars, set your alarms and give 30 minutes of your time for a place that gives you hours of enjoyment throughout the year.

The Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) will be once again spearheading a Coastal Clean-up in support of the Ocean Conservancy-led International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Be there at 7am at the Children’s Park in the Bight, this Saturday  21 st September .  Bring gloves and a bags if possible.

Over half a million volunteers participated around the world, covering a distance of nearly 18,000 mile, collecting over 10 million pounds of rubbish!

Last year in Provo, we collected 63 bags of trash, consisting of beer cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, cans and other general debris.  Myself and two Provo Primary families joined in the effort of this initiative.  This year we hope that many more teachers and families will support the event.

Hockey Camp 2013

hockey-camp-2013 During our hockey camp this year, the children worked with Josh Williams, from Philadelphia Revolution Junior A team in the Eastern Hockey League. Josh, now 18 years old, is an ex Provo Primary student himself and the son of Director, Alison Williams. He has been living, attending school and playing ice hockey in The U.S since 2007.  Josh was happy to come back to Provo to work with our children this summer. ” We worked on improving our skating, getting better at stick handling, we worked on our shot and played a lot of fun games”.

Josh said, “The children were all enthusiastic, worked hard and improved greatly over the week”. The children said “We all had fun working with Josh!”

Yummy, Tasty Nutrition Classes

As part of this term’s ‘Keeping Healthy Week’, nutritionist Tamika Handfield came in to teach Nutrition classes to all the children from Year 2 – 6.  Some classes made egg and vegetable burritos, while others made fruit kebabs.  The children learned about how whole-grain foods and fruits and vegetables are healthy, the importance of looking at the labels on food packaging,  washing hands before cooking, safety in the kitchen and that washing up is part of the cooking process!    PTV came along to video for their news programme.  Click on to see photos and to learn more about our nutrition classes.

Year 4 Set Out to Find the Balance between Conservation & Tourism!

yr-4-nwpoint-trip-june-2013-18How can we build resorts that attract tourists without destroying our island’s natural environments? Can we protect our stunning National Parks from damage while encouraging people to visit and enjoy them? Finally, is it even possible to enjoy watching wildlife without making them feel threatened in their natural habitats?

Flamingo Class took the trip to Northwest Point last week to learn about the difficult balance between conservation and tourism. And what a trip it was!

Join us to see Year 4’s perfomance of My Dad’s a Birdman

yr4-birdman-poster-2013Roll up! Roll up! It’s time for the Great Human Bird Competition!

As part of our Literacy project on Plays, Flamingo Class are excited to present their very own performance of My Dad’s A Birdman on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

The Year 4 classroom has been a hive of activity for the past 13 days, as we developed our theatre project using skills learned across our curriculum. Every lesson has had a distinctly feathery theme! We invite you all to join us for a memorable performance…we’re ready for take off!

In our reading, we have been thinking about how we can infer how characters feel by the things that they say. We have used this difficult skill to help us create a fantastic play, using all our drama skills to bring the story to life!

But it hasn’t stopped with reading skills! We have been learning about persuasive writing so that we can create advertisements for our performance. In our dance lessons, we have choreographed original dances to represent moods and feelings as well as create images of birds in our audience’s mind. In order to create our set and props, we have used our art and design lessons. We even experimented with air resistance in science to see if we really could fly!

We can’t wait to show you our fantastic show. So Roll up! Roll up!

An Introduction to Beach Soccer

beach-soccer-2013Both our boys and girls’ teams have thoroughly enjoyed participating in a friendly inter-school Beach Soccer Tournament this past couple of weeks.

Playing on the new TCIFA beach soccer pitch for the first time was exciting.  It certainly was a challenge, with the ball not rolling as much as it usually does on grass.  It’s hard on your muscles to run in sand, too!

Both teams played really well, with the girls almost reaching the final.

I was impressed by the teamwork, support, skills and sheer determination to keep going, in spite of tiredness and injuries. There was some fantastic defending and some terrific goals.  “It felt good to score a goal!” said one of the girls who had scored an amazing goal by chipping the ball over the defenders and over the goalie’s head into the back of the net.

Provo Primary joins in with TCI Shines Clean-up

tci-shines-2013-1Well done to our dedicated environmentally-conscious families who rose early this morning to participate in the 5th annual Earth Day TCI Shines Clean-up campaign.  Thank you for taking part in this community event to help keep our island ‘beautiful by nature’.

Joining forces with a group of volunteers from The Point Grace Resort, the litter-grabbing team traveled the route between the school and the Graceway Sports Centre and TCIFA soccer field.  This route is frequently used by our children on their way to use these sporting facilities as part of our P.E programme.

In all, over a dozen giant rubbish bags were filled with litter!  On a positive note this seemed less than when we collected along this same route back in October 2011, but still it was a disappointment to find so many drink bottles, snack packets and food containers littering our local community.   Our young helpers just couldn’t understand why the litter was there.  “People should put it in the bin!” they remarked.

Thank you everyone, from Provo Children’s Home

pch-certificate-march-2013

This week, it was lovely to receive and share a thank you certificate and note to all of our families here at Provo Primary School from the Provo Children’s Home (PCH). The certificate was presented to the children in our weekly ‘Celebration Assembly’.

Last term, our School Council worked hard to co-ordinate and promote a variety of events to raise money and collect food for this worthy local community charity.  Read more about our fundraising events here.

Tanis Wake-Forbes passed on the thank you certificate as a small token of appreciation for our kindness and support of PCH.  She said, “I would like to thank the children, parents and staff of Provo Primary School for their continued support and generosity to PCH.  Without donations like these we would find it very difficult to provide the level of care for our less fortunate children.”  She went on to say, “It is doubly appreciated when support comes from children helping other children and brings out the best in all of us.  Thank you again for caring.”

Thank you everyone and we look forward to continuing to support the PCH again in the future.

School Council Presents Donations to Provo Children’s Home

school-council-childrens-home-mar-2013-3 A group of our School Councilors were proud today to present boxes of food and $472.13 of Dress Down and Yard Sale money to Tanis Wake-Forbes from the Provo Children’s Home.

Tanis was thrilled by everyone’s generosity, stating that the donation and food items were much appreciated.  In particular, she told the children that she was happy to see children working together to help other children.  She also said that she would like to pass on a huge thank you to all of the Provo Primary families for their support.

Well done to all of our school councilors who, together with Miss Mani, organised both a toy and book sale at our recent PTA Yard Sale and the food drive collection.  Look what you can achieve when you work as a team.

Preschool Bounce-A-Thon – March 2013

ps-bounce-2013 Our Preschool class had lots of fun bouncing like ‘Bouncing Ben’ from Letterland.

They bounced up and down the green field collecting paper carrots.  Afterwards, our little ‘bunnies’ enjoyed crunching on real carrot sticks.

The Bounce-a-thon was a preschool adaptation of our Bike-a-walk-a-thon fundraising event. Congratulations to all our bouncing bunnies and thank you for all the generous donations you collected that will go towards the purchase of new computer and reading resources across the school!
