Grade 3s Measuring in Science and Numeracy

g3-science-07-04-09

The Grade 3s have been testing and measuring the strength of magnets in Science.  They had to think of a way of making the tests fair by looking at the variables closely.  They decided which variables they needed to change, and which variables needed to be kept the same?  They did some individual and group recording of their experiments.  Click here to have a go at an interactive online magnet experiment.

g3-capacity-08-04-09In Numeracy they have been looking at capacity.  To practise their measuring skills they estimated what each container would hold, then they used the measuring equipment to help them to read millilitres and litres as accurately as possible. They did really well and it was lots of fun to explore this topic through practically exploration.

Grade 4 Pop-up Books

g4-pop-u-books-03-04-09

Grade Four’s Design and Technology project for this term has been all about ‘Pop-up’ books. They researched lots of different pop up books and then designed their own. The children wrote their own stories and then tried out different types of pop ups; flaps, steps, spirals, spinners and sliders. They enjoyed sharing them with each other and other classes and teachers.  Some of the children read their books together with Miss Sian, our principal.  She was very impressed with the quality of both the pop-up designs and the stories.  She had lots of fun the opening flaps and pulling the sliders!  Well done, Miss Helen and all the Grade 4s for all your hard work on this project.  It is a great example of how Literacy skills can be taught through a creative purposeful approach.  We are sure you’ll treasure these books for years to come.

Can We Change Places? Exploring Sculptures

g3-sculpture-5-2009

Grade 3 looked at how they could enhance the outdoor environment by creating sculptures. After researching into different types of sculptures they worked collaboratively in groups working on their own designs. There was lots of discussion as to how they could incorporate everyone’s ideas and lots of problem solving going on. Each sculpture was very different and the ability to listen, work and co-operate with each other made each one a huge success. They were so proud of their achievements that some of the children even organised ‘sculpture tours’ so that other children in the school could experience and appreciate them to their potential. Well done Grade 3 for designing and making such wonderful interactive creations!  Click on to see more photos of the sculptures being made and the final pieces.

Preschool Pancake Breakfast

preschool-aqua

The Preschool children have been exploring the concept of food and learning about all its different varieties. Some of the questions we have focused on are… where does food come from… how do fruits and vegetables grow… what kinds of foods do we like, dislike, and how do we make food like cake, trail mix, soup etc…? The Pre-School has created a healthy foods cookbook which includes family recipes that each child enjoys to eat at home. These will be on sale at the school. Our food exploration was topped off with a Pancake Breakfast at Aqua restaurant. It was enjoyed by all – see us all in the photo above munching away! Many thanks to Joan and Clive for having us at their restaurant and also to all the parents who helped out to make this trip possible.

Grade 2 Wheeled Webkinz Vehicles

Webkinz have been all the craze in Grade 2, so when we started thinking about our Design Technology project this term on wheeled vehicles, we decided to design and make a vehicle for our Webkinz! Take a look at our slideshow to see all of our wonderful creations – talk about traveling in style! The vehicle above has a ladder up to the extra roof seating and even a GPS to guide them on their journey. What fun we had making them and what a variety of models.

Grades 1 and 2 Visit the Conch Farm

conch-farm-1-13-03-08.jpg

At the end of last term, Grades 1 and 2 enjoyed a great trip to the Turks and Caicos Conch Farm – the only one in the whole world! Danver gave us a super tour and we learned all about the life cycle of the conch. It was fun to meet Sally and Jerry, the resident wild conch. We also enjoyed singing the song ‘Dry Conch’. Listen to the song as you see photos of our trip. Thanks again to all the parents who helped out with transport. So much to see and learn – I think we all learned something new!

In the Style of Vincent Van Gogh

g2-vangogh1050308.jpg

In Grade 2, we have enjoyed looking at some of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. He used vivid colours and wild brush strokes to express how he was feeling when he painted. This term, different people have helped us to use pastels, paint and computer software to create our own pictures in the style of Van Gogh. Take a look at our slideshows to see our work.

Grade 2 Challenge you to Solve their Numeracy Puzzle?

g2-310108.jpg

The Grade 2 enjoy solving numeracy problems. Our latest challenge was a computer-based puzzle and involved a nature reserve where six pairs of animals need to be given new homes in six different environments. The children were given clues, which included positional language, to help them decide which animals should live in which areas.

After, the children worked in pairs to position their own animals and wrote clues for another pair of children to use. They enjoyed doing these so much that that the class decided to make a large display so that children in other classes could have a go. The children all worked together to make a large-scale version of the Nature Reserve plan and movable animal cards. We hope you get a chance to come into the Computer Room and have a go at solving our Numeracy puzzle!

Click here to see some photos of the children making the map and close ups of some of the clues.

Today, Grades 2 and 3 visited the Environmental Centre in The Bight. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Brian Riggs, the curator, who showed us around the displays and talked to us about the different habitats that our animals and plants share with us. He also spoke to us about ways in which we can help to protect the environment.

Grade 3 – Moving Monsters

At the end of last term, the Grade 3’s completed their Design Technology models of ‘Moving Monsters’. This unit focused on developing the children’s understanding of control through investigating simple pneumatic systems. We chose to make dragons as we had been reading lots of stories about dragons in our Literacy work. Click on the movie below to see one of our dragons in action.

Can you Make a Chair out of Newspaper?

Whilst some of the children in Grades 3-5 were out of school competing in the Inter-Schools Athletics, the rest of the Grades 3-5 joined together to work on a fun problem solving activity. Supplied with only a small pile of newspapers and a roll of tape, they were set the challenge – ‘Can you design and make a chair that will support your weight?’

Grade 3 Egyptian Patterns, Alliterations and Prints

This past couple of weeks in ICT, the Grade 3s have been learning to develop images in the graphics program, Adobe Photoshop. We have looked at some examples of Pop Art by the artist Andy Warhol. These have inspired us to create our own work, using an image of the Egyptian Pharaoh, King Tut. In Art, we have also been making King Tut block prints and in Literacy have written instructions on how to make them. We have also been improving our dictionary skills, and we used these to help us to find interesting vocabulary to help us create an Egyptian alliteration poem.

Rainforest Music and Numeracy Investigations!

251006131.jpg
The Grade 3’s have started a topic on Tropical Rainforests. In music, we composed our own piece of music called ‘Voices of the Rainforest’. We thought of the different animals that we might hear and used percussion instruments for their voices.

Click here if you would like to hear us performing our voices-of-the-rainforest.mp3

Look at the photo above and see if you can hear the different instruments we are playing.

We have also been exploring area and perimeter in Numeracy and would like to share some of our investigations with you and link you to a few great websites that we have enjoyed.
