Year 6 Create Edible Animal Cells

yr-6-animal-cells-oct-2015 (2)Year 6 has been learning that all living things (animals and plants) are made of cells which are the building blocks of life.

To help us get to grips with the scientific vocabulary (complex and advanced) and to assist with our understanding, we gathered an array of candies and jelly. The candies were used to create our very own edible animal cell with the best candies illustrating a different aspect of the cell and its purpose.

We discovered that most cells are very small and that they are invisible without using a microscope. Cells are covered by a cell membrane and come in different shapes.

Year 6 Flowers

yr-6-flowers-may-2015-(8)Year six students have been studying the work of Van Gogh. We paid particular attention to his famous still life: Sunflowers. Using this as stimulus, the students got busy creating their own flower still life using a variety of flowers. Look closely at our photos and you will discover some very exotic ones!

Focusing on line, space, tone and shade the students sketched carefully to achieve the same style as Van Gogh, but with different flower creations. Coloured pastels were then introduced to enable different shades and tones to be created within the colouring stage. The vase was decorated and some individuals decided to use colours to enhance the background of their work.

This was quite a lengthy process and the students worked meticulously in order to produce their final version.

We hope you like them and that they inspire you to create your own Van Gogh-like masterpiece.

Healthy Reefs Need Sharks!

shark-talk-mar-2015-3Years 5 and 6 were extremely fortunate to attend Brayton Hall and listen to a talk delivered by Rob Stewart. Rob Stewart is an enthusiastic advocate for sharks and the maker of the documentary film ‘Sharkwater’.

Feedback from students indicated the following:

‘A great way to show how children can be advocates for something in which they believe in.’

‘A well-prepared talk which was easy to follow and understand.’

‘Rob was clearly passionate about sharks and extremely knowledgeable about them.’

Following this, our Year 2-4s were also able to join in as Rob was able to squeeze in a time to come to the school and talk to them too – thank you Ali for arranging this.

Community members are invited to a public screening of ‘Sharkwater’ Saturday evening – see details here.

Year 6 Study the Human Body

yr-6-human-body-mar-2015 (7)Year 6 students have enjoyed studying the human body; which has been the main focus of our learning in science this term. They made an impressive start to this topic by relaying facts that they already knew about the human body and the questions that they wanted to explore about bodily functions as the topic progressed.

They have carried out a number of investigations such as monitoring our BPM during various activities; breathing rates during different activities and how different fluids increase the rate of tooth decay. They have been able to apply their understanding of the human body to these experiments in order to draw conclusions.

The students examined in great detail: the digestive system; the respiratory system; the circulatory system; the skeletal system and healthy lifestyles.

The students were exposed to extensive scientific vocabulary throughout this topic and worked extremely hard in gaining an increased understanding of how the main organ systems work.

Year 6 Explore Natural Disasters

yr-6-natural-disasters-jan-2015Year 6 has made an impressive start to their new topic Natural Disasters.  ‘Board blasting’ natural and man-made disasters kick started our thinking into this area.  The children were then able to define the differences between such disasters and realised that our planet can become angry at times.

Wearing our geologist hats we were able to observe the structure of the earth and examine the Tectonic Plate Theory in order to understand how natural disasters can occur.

Working in pairs the children used traditional and digital resources to capture relevant information and interesting facts on a number of natural disasters.  Please come and check out some of our information posters as you might discover something that you did not know before…

School Council 2014/2015 set their Action Plan

school-council-reps-2014-15 Provo Primary Students have successfully elected their school council members for the academic year ahead.

Competition for School Council was fierce and Years 2 to 6 got busy campaigning, in a number of ways, to persuade their classmates why they would make an invaluable member to the council this year.  From multimedia presentations, posters and worthy speeches, the school was buzzing with tremendous enthusiasm and dedication from all students who participated.  Unfortunately there could only be 2 members from each year group and those who didn’t make it should be extremely proud of their efforts and commitment to ensuring that all voices in our school are heard.

This term we have set ourselves some SMART targets to work towards achieving.  Please see our Action Plan below for this first term.

“X Marks the Spot!”

yr-six-anti-bullying-march-2014Year Six recently joined forces with Justin Spencer, founder of Recycled Percussion and Legacy X in taking a stance against bullying by helping him build the worlds largest RED ‘X’, symbolizing our mission to stop bullying!

Year six students contributed powerful anti-bullying messages to Justin and the Legacy X team, which are now included in this anti-bullying sign in the Nevada Desert. Each leg of the RED ‘X’ is as big as a football field and consists of a compilation of almost  250, 000 personal anti-bullying messages, taken from people around the world.

Year Six were proud to be a part of this mammoth project, which will hopefully make a global impact upon the lives of those who suffer or have suffered from the devastating impact that bullying can bring.

Yr 6 Share their Stories with Yr 1

yr-6-Christmas-Stories-dec-2013-8Just before the Christmas holidays Year 6 joined up with Year 1 to share with them some of the stories that they had created based upon the holiday season. Year 6 authors were presented with the task of drafting a full Christmas story that would be suitable for a young audience. They were required to word process the final draft, add in relevant illustrations, design a front cover and include a blurb. The final result was undoubtedly professional!

More fun was to be had when we entered the Year 1 classroom and shared the finished pieces with the younger children. Year 1 were extremely impressed with the Year 6 storytellers as they listened with concentration, asked questions about the stories and most importantly enjoyed the content on offer. [Read more…]

Year 6 Investigate the Era of World War 2

yr-6-ww2-nov-2013 (2)Over the last number of weeks, Year 6 have adopted the role of the historian to investigate the era of World War 2.  Placing events in chronological order kick-started our study of this significant time in history and allowed us to select specific areas to focus on in greater detail.  The Year 6 were then able to carry out research using both digital and traditional resources to gather relevant facts and information on their chosen topic.  Getting to work quickly, they then were required to present this information in the form of an Information Poster that would illustrate their research in an easy to understand manner.  The final results were fantastic and Year 6 enjoyed learning from one another on areas such as the Blitz, The Holocaust, The Role of Women, Pearl Harbor, Gas Masks, Rationing of Food and Clothing and The Evacuation of Children.

T.C.I. Smile visit Provo Primary Year 5 and 6

tooth-nov-2013Last Friday witnessed T.C.I. Smile visit Provo Primary Year 5 and 6 students.  They presented a terrific presentation regarding the physical features of teeth, the importance of dental hygiene and the purpose of the orthodontist.  T.C.I. Smile were impressed with the knowledge that our pupils already held regarding teeth and good oral hygiene, due to the responses given from our students to the questions asked from the team at T.C.I. Smile.

The session was extremely beneficial in demonstrating how an orthodontist can repair unaligned teeth, reshape gums and other problems that can occur with the structure of our teeth and gums.  The students were left in awe at the computer technology that the orthodontist used in order to repair these issues and enjoyed watching the clips that showed before and after shots.

A great outside visit that was both valuable and complementary to what we promote to our children about healthy lifestyles.

Year 6 Investigate Air Resistance

yr-6-parachutes-oct-2013 (4)Year 6 carried out an investigation to observe exactly how air resistance slows down a moving object.

We have discovered that objects which move through the air experience the force of friction. This is called air resistance. Air resistance acts against gravity on falling objects making them slow down as they fall.

Parachutes are used to slow down the speed of the person or object suspended from the parachute. The parachute is affected by gravity and air resistance.

With this in mind, we got to work making a variety of parachutes. Using different materials cut to different sizes we worked enthusiastically to create a range of different parachutes. When the devising process was complete we headed outside to put the theories to the test.
