What a Gift to be Bilingual!

yr-1-spanish-immersion-dec-2014 (6)What a gift to be bilingual!  With the incredibly diverse student body we have at Provo Primary, a fair number of students do speak other languages fluently (French, Creole, Spanish, Hebrew, Croatian, etc.) and academic studies back up what we know to be true…foreign languages are most easily learned at a young age.  Over the past several years, Provo Primary has enriched and expanded it’s foreign language curriculum, moving beyond Spanish classes in Key Stages 1 and 2, to offer true Spanish Immersion to the school’s younger students.

Miss Tracy’s Year 1 classroom is a lively place any morning of the week…

Key Stage 2 Sports Day: Jump, Run, Throw – Repeat!

ks2-sports-day-oct-2014 (11)The walk over to TCI’s national stadium was a colourful one, with nearly 60 Key Stage 2 students decked out in their team colours for their annual sports day. After several months of twice weekly track and field sessions, Teams Green, Blue, Turquoise, White, Yellow, Red and Orange were ready to compete…as individuals in each event and for team glory as well. Rotating through events including long jump, shot put, high jump, javelin, discus, hurdles and a 40 yard dash, each child strived to beat the personal bests they had recorded throughout training.

Thousands of books & dozens of children = a very busy library!

library-oct-2014-4On most mornings, the busiest room at Provo Primary is the school’s ever expanding library, a comfortable, well-lit space filled wall to wall with books (over 4,000 at last count!) just waiting to be discovered by a student, for the first or fortieth time.

A love of literacy is integral to the curriculum at Provo Primary and clearly on display as students, ranging in age from Year 1s to Year 6s, exchange books under the watchful eye of volunteer parent librarians, who often assist with selections as well as the logistics of checking titles in and out.

This past summer, over $7,500.00 was spent on compelling new literacy resources for the library and individual classrooms, a testament to the school’s dedication to fostering a love of reading in all students.

Our PTA “Cocktails & Curry” fundraiser – an evening of great food and friends

pta-cocktails-curry-2014 (1)It was an evening of great food and friends at Bay Bistro on May 16th, as the PTA put on a fabulous “Cocktails & Curry” fundraiser that netted thousands of dollars for school and classroom enhancements.

With all classes contributing beautiful artwork and over 50 other silent auction items donated by local businesses, there was lively bidding going on throughout the night, including some via email and cell phone!

As dessert was cleared away, the 100 person+ crowd made their way to the Sandbar after-party where the fun continued into the wee hours, raffle winners were drawn by DJ Dallas and guests were entertained by Johnny’s infamous fire show.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came and supported the school – we look forward to allocating the monies raised towards enhancing our children’s education!

Once Upon a Story Night…

bedtime-stories-march-2014-5“Once Upon a Time, on a lovely little island, at a lovely little school, there were lovely little students who loved reading books and listening to stories…”

If a tale was to be written about our annual evening of Bedtime Stories, that would be a fitting opening line.  The sun had begun to set and just the right amount of breeze was blowing, as dozens of children streamed back to school at 5:30 in the evening, wearing their pajamas, clutching their teddy bears and excitedly awaiting the hour of stories that lay ahead.

Bonfire Night – 5th November, 2013

bonfire-1For the third year running, Britain’s traditional “Bonfire Night” was celebrated by students of Provo Primary School, complete with the burning of a student-made Guy Fawkes, the scapegoat of the infamous “Gunpowder Plot”.  Since Mr. Toby “reignited” this English tradition two years ago with a humble gathering in the school parking lot, the celebration has relocated to Bay Bistro (thank you Clive and Joan!) to accommodate the entire school community. Nearly 100 parents and children descended onto the beach promptly at 6pm so as not to miss the 6:30pm lighting of the fire and were mesmerized as the massive bonfire was lit and Guy went up in flames.   The party also included traditional treats such as sausages on a stick and toffee covered apples, a call and response of “Remember, Remember, the 5th of November…” and a surprise fireworks display to end the evening.

An educational and entertaining gathering for all who attended and a perfect example of how as educators, we strive to incorporate topic work in a myriad of creative ways. [Read more…]

After School Spotlight: Art Club

art-club-nov-2013 (20)When Miss Charlotte and her husband enrolled their two children at Provo Primary last year, little did anyone know the school was soon to have an “art attack”!  An accomplished professional artist with a graduate degree in higher education art and design from Cambridge University, Charlotte’s initial after-school art club proved so popular, that there are now  “junior” and “senior” sections on separate days with projects targeted to the different age ranges.

Keeping Healthy Week in Action – Oct 2013

keeping-healthy-in-action-oct-2013 (20)After a week off for mid-term break, students and staff have hit the ground running with Provo Primary’s termly “Keeping Healthy Week”. School-wide activities, like the “Wake Up – Shake Up” aerobics session led by fitness trainer Jo Gray and the walk (or run) to school are great reminders of how important it is to keep active…and that fitness can be fun! The Early Years students’ certainly proved that point, wearing huge smiles as they flapped, hopped or raced across the school field as birds, bunnies and monkeys in their own set of races.

Read on and see some wonderful photos of the children in action!
