Happy Birthday Mr. Sajouste

Mr. Sajouste HB

Mr. Sajouste has been our school caretaker for 9 years. Every morning he opens up the school, he works hard all day and locks it up again before he goes home. Everyone likes Mr. Sajouste and yesterday it really showed as the whole school sang Happy Birthday to him. We made Sajouste a special platter of fruit which he really enjoyed (I think he liked the cookies surrounding the fruit the best of all).

Scholarship Programme Update

scholarship-spring-newsletter-2014As you may have been aware, the school Scholarship Programme hosted a very successful event at Provo Golf Club during the Christmas Holidays. The event formed part of our fundraising efforts for the next, 2014-2015, academic year. It was also our aim to raise awareness of our programme and to attract sponsors and donations from outside our school community.

In recent months we have had a number of requests for more information about the Scholarship Programme. We hope that you find our first Scholarship Newsletter informative (click on the link or the image to download). The aim of the Newsletter is to give updates on our fundraising progress while providing the opportunity to thank our generous supporters.

Welcome to a New School Year

back-2-school-2013It has been fantastic to see everyone (or almost everyone) back at school this week and welcoming new families and teachers into the school.

Apart from a couple of children in Early Years who are understandably still settling, everyone seems to be happy and making new friends. It’s been great to see the children who were at Provo Primary last year helping new children to feel welcome in their new class and school. I was particularly impressed with one of our two year olds who was trying very hard to help her friend settle on the first day. Well done, you receive the first empathy award of the year!

Thank you to all parents who have contributed in one way or another by volunteering their time, offering ideas, or donating resources to enhance our school this year.

Everyone will have either noticed or probably been told by their children about our new playground dome, Early Years play equipment and natural shade areas that we’ve created over the summer. We’ve also got lots of Science, Literacy, Numeracy, Art and general classroom resources, that we will be telling you more about in main school newsletter next week.  We will also pass on our events calendar for this term,  after we have confirmed and added in upcoming PTA events.

All the very best for this new school year, which also marks Provo Primary’s 10th anniversary at this location and which we will be celebrating shortly!

Summer Camp

MindUP and Math Summer Camp

Mind-up-2013-1“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

For our MindUP and Math Sessions this year, the children were given an open ended task of designing a Theme Park.

We had a price list of materials and the children set off designing and building their structures and calculating the cost.

Hockey Camp 2013

hockey-camp-2013 During our hockey camp this year, the children worked with Josh Williams, from Philadelphia Revolution Junior A team in the Eastern Hockey League. Josh, now 18 years old, is an ex Provo Primary student himself and the son of Director, Alison Williams. He has been living, attending school and playing ice hockey in The U.S since 2007.  Josh was happy to come back to Provo to work with our children this summer. ” We worked on improving our skating, getting better at stick handling, we worked on our shot and played a lot of fun games”.

Josh said, “The children were all enthusiastic, worked hard and improved greatly over the week”. The children said “We all had fun working with Josh!”

Congratulations to our Graduates of 2013

graduates-2013Our End of Year Assembly and Graduation Ceremony is a time when we focus on our children’s accomplishments throughout the year and we truly have an amazing group of children, teachers, not to mention parents, here at Provo Primary.

Although all our graduating students of 2013 have been commended on their outstanding test scores, they are far more than this. Helping children to recognize and value their innate talents and strengths plays a huge part in how we educate our children at Provo Primary.

Our Creative Curriculum Leads to Great Academic Success

stars-of-week-may-2013Three children from Miss Cara’s class decided to take the Year 7 TCI Middle School entrance test last weekend.  We are pleased to report Theo Weldon (Year 5), Jamie Gray (Year 5) and Melinda Walkin (Year 6) were awarded the top three places.  Theo also took the British West Indies Collegiate Year 7 Entrance Test and gained the top place there as well.

This is not the first time we have seen such wonderful test results from our students and we believe this is proof that our creative, hands on approach to learning, not only makes learning more meaningful, but also helps develop higher academic attainment.  This is the second year in a row that we have gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in the Year 7 TCI Middle School Entrance Tests and the third year in a row gaining the 1st position and 3rd position. We have also gained the top position in the Year 7 British West Indies Collegiate School Entrance Test for the past 3 years in a row (2011,2012 and 2013) and also in 2009.

Today was our first Parent and Babies/Tots Session for 2013

tots-02-05-13 (3)It was lovely to see new smiling faces enjoying our soft play area and playing alongside each other. The children each made a Flamingo Hand Print picture (our school logo) to take home with them. They seemed to really enjoy the feeling of the paint brushes tickling their little fingers and even had fun washing the paint off their hands. Enjoy these pictures of the children busy playing and creating their art work.

Year 4’s World Ocean Day Maths Class

Our Year 4 Math group linked World Ocean Day to learning Maths facts today.

OCEAN FACT #1   Over ¾ of our planet is covered by oceans

Math fun facts:

~ As a percentage, ¾ is 75%
~ As a decimal, ¾ is 0.75
~ As money, 75 cents
~ As a fraction, ¾ can also be written as:  6/8,   9/12,   12/16,      15/20,   18/24,   21/28,   24/32,   27/36,   30/40

We call these equivalent fractions.  This means that they are all worth the same value – even though they look different!

How did we find them?  We multiplied the top number (numerator) by two and then we did the same to the bottom number (denominator) and got 6/8.  Then we multiplied the numerator by three and did the same to the denominator and got 9/12.  We went on with this pattern 10 times.  Finally, we discovered that if we took the zero off 30/40 it is the same as ¾!

Boca visits Provo Primary

Boca Floppy Williams is first and foremost Ms. Alison’s pet golden retriever, but she also works as an emotional support and therapy dog. This means that she offers help to people who need it. She is really good at sensing when children are upset and she can help make them feel better. If you haven’t already tried it, try talking to her and she’ll answer you through Ms. Alison. (She needs Ms. Alison to interpret what she’s trying to say in dog language.) She even helps relieve pain when children hurt themselves, just by letting them stroke her.  She helps children stop crying and relax so the pain goes away much faster.

Providenciales Primary School Senior Steel Band are tuning up and raring to go!.

After only two music lessons this term, the children in Provo Primary School Senior Steel Band are already playing three songs: Calypso Warm Up, Jamaica Farewell and Matilda. These young musicians are taking it very seriously this year and I have no doubt that they will be out in the community playing in no time. If you happen to enter the school during recess times, you may hear them practising in their spare time and WOW do they sound good!!!
