School Council 2012-13

Our School Council Reps for 2012-13 have been voted in. The team have lots of big ideas and are keen to work together for the good of the school. Recycling was top of the agenda in their first active and productive meeting, and this project is now back up and running. Playground timetables too were fairly agreed upon.

We are very proud of our School Council and consider this to be a strong and well established feature of our school. We think it is very important that children have a means of discussing important issues about our school and have a forum for airing views and ideas.

International Coastal Clean Up, 2012

Children from Provo Primary School joined volunteers around the world to pick up rubbish from our coastal environment.  International Coastal Cleanup, is an annual event to raise awareness of the importance of keeping the world’s waterways and oceans clean. Well done and thank you to the families who got up ‘super’ early to join in other community members, cleaning up the Children’s Park Beach in the Bight.  The children did a great job and, although they were disappointed by the amount of rubbish they actually collected, they felt proud that they had  cleaned up an area that is often enjoyed by children.  The clean up was organised by the ‘Environmental Club’ together with the DEMA.  They hope to see this becoming an annual event on our TCI calendars.

Owl Pellet Dissection Lesson

Year 4, 5 and 6 students had an opportunity to participate in an owl pellet dissection lesson using laboratory sterilized barn owl pellets. Owl pellets are neat little packages of mostly fur and bones that are regurgitated by an owl after it has finished digesting everything else. The students worked together to discover what the barn owls had been eating by dissecting their pellets. By carefully sorting and organizing the bones they found, students were able to reconstruct a skeleton of a rodent, in this case a vole. Thank you Miss Bonnie for providing such an interesting lesson.

Outstanding Academic Successes at Provo Primary School, 2012

outstanding-acievement-2012We would particularly like to mention some of the many academic successes that we have had this year pertaining to our oldest students in the school (Years 5 and 6).

*       Many children in Year 6 have attained level 5c’s and 5b’s and are working well ahead of Year 6 expectations in English, Mathematics and Science. One child was assessed as a level 6c writer, working just below the average for a 13 year old.

*       Some of our Year 6s have been following an extended Year 7 Maths curriculum this year.  All these children have gained level 7c’s and a 7b which is well ahead of their expected level, completing a paper which is generally done in Year 9 by 14 year olds!

*       In school entrance exams, we have also experienced huge successes, gaining high marks across the board in entrance exams. We gained the 1st, 2nd, 3rd places in the TCI Middle School.

*       Our school also attained 1st and 3rd place in the Year 7 British West Indies Collegiate exam again, competing against a whole host of other children.

*       One of our Year 5 students also came in 1st place in the Year 6 exam for British West Indies Collegiate and one was accepted into Year 7.  All children that sat the exam were accepted into the school.

*       Our whole Year 5 class attained the UK national average for Year 5 in English and Mathematics, with some children achieving level 5c’s and 5b’s, working well ahead of expectations.

World Oceans Day, 2012

Today is World Oceans Day! It’s an opportunity to us all to focus on our shared world ocean, learn more and do more to help protect and conserve the ocean, for now and for future generations.

What will you do today to explore, learn, and enjoy the beauty and wonder of our world ocean?

Let’s hope that each and everyone of you at Provo Primary takes the time to reflect on what you can do to protect and conserve them.  With the ocean all around us, let’s all try and dip our toes into the crystal blue waters today and make a splash in celebration of World Oceans Day!

Preschool Celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Celebrations across the school took place to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.   The Turks and Caicos is a UK Overseas Territory and so the queen is our Head of State.  Well, she did look fancy as she posed for a photo opportunity with our youngest children, all dressed up in their red, white and blue and donning the royal crown.  Thank you,  for letting them sit in your throne,  your majesty!  Click on to enjoy more photos of our royal princes and princesses.

TCSPCA Dog Show Poster Winner

Well done to all our creative artists that entered the TCSPCA Dog Show Poster competition.  The winning design, by a child in our Year 5 class, has been chosen to be on all the publicity media advertising the upcoming event. Click on image to see a close up of this wonderful picture.

The dog show is an annual fundraising event and will be this Saturday 26th May at the Turtle Cove Marina, between 3 and 7 PM.  With events such as ‘best in show’, ‘best trick’, ‘waggiest tail’, ‘best potcake’ and ‘the dog the judges would like to take home’, it sure will be a great afternoon for all the family and dog lovers to enjoy.

Look out for Ms Alison and Boca, along with many of our school families and their pet dogs.

The TCSPCA is the oldest and most established Animal Welfare Organization in the Turks & Caicos Islands.  It is a non profit, registered charity that was established in 1998.   Click on the link to learn more about the work of the TCSPCA.  And, if you’re not sure what ‘best potcake’ meant above, then you’ll find out what a potcake is on their website.

TCIRFU Tag Rugby Championships 2012

The inaugural Digicel Interschools TAG Rugby Championships were held this weekend at the TCIRFU’s Meridian Field in Grace Bay Village.  Children from schools all across Providenciales turned out to compete against each other in the game of Tag Rugby.

We entered two teams: one in the Under 8s, and another in the Under 11’s.  The children really enjoyed themselves and played fantastically.  “The children were great sports throughout the event,” commented one parent watching.  Well done everyone!  Special congratulations go to our Under 11 team who won the championship in their age group.

We would like to say a big thank you to Coach Mark for helping our teams during the tournament.  He did a fantastic job encouraging the children.  Thanks also to all the parents and friends who came out to support the event.

Earth Day Clean Up, 2012

Throughout the school, the children took part in a number of activities to celebrate Earth Day, 2012.  In our Friday assembly, Year 5 introduced Earth Day with a presentation, Year 1 told everyone some facts about how they could help to ‘Save our Earth’ and Year 2 talked about how sea turtles are becoming extinct and the dangers they face, such as rubbish in the ocean.

On Earth Day for the past 3 years, The Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association has organised a ‘TCI Shines Earth Day Clean- up Campaign’.  Donning gloves and raring to play their part, the children in years 3 – 6 collected rubbish outside the school perimeter fencing, around the TCIFA soccer field and up to the Graceway Sports Centre. The children in Years 1 and 2 collected litter from around the school playground.

The children filled approximately 30 large trash bags in total – almost all with rubbish collected from outside the school grounds.  The photo on the left shows the children with just a few of these bags.  The children were upset to have found so much rubbish that people had littered in our area, but felt happy that they had helped clean up their surroundings.

How does your Garden Grow?

Following a recent donation of seeds, soil, trowels, gloves and a new watering can by a generous parent, the school garden has experienced a new frenzy of gardening activity during lunchtimes and playtimes.  A group of children have been busy planting squash, tomato, basil , Swiss chard, peas and wild flower seeds and they hope to share a salad together when everything is fully grown.  I asked the children what they liked about the garden and here are some of their thoughts…”It’s fun to look after the plants and actually see them growing tall…I like caring for our garden and enjoy sharing it with all the animals that live there…It’s fun to clean it up with the sweeping brushes we made with palm leaves…it’s peaceful and nice to be with all the nature…everyone can participate and come and join us in the garden.”

‘The Funky Four’ perform their new Hip Hop Dance

Four girls from Year 3 have been busy during their recess time creating a hip hop dance, which they have named ‘JKKS – The Dance’.  It was so creative, I just had to video it and share it with you all!  The girls say that they were inspired by their PE gymnastics lessons, their weekend ‘hip hop’ dance lessons and by watching some of the older children creating dance routines.  The complex dance has been choreographed and performed with no music, so don’t panic if you hear no sound coming from your computer! As they danced, the children counted out beats of 8 in their head to keep time and to move in unison. Well done ‘Funky Four’ – it’s fabulous – you should be very proud of your group effort!  We look forward to further new dances from ‘The Funky Four’ and hope to share other children’s dance videos in the near future.

Theme Week Activities 2012

Theme Week 2012 was a great success.  The theme was ‘A Day in the Life of…’ and each class choose a different topic to explore throughout the week. It all culminated with a dress up-parade, with the children showing off their impressive costumes to each other.   This was followed by an ‘Open House’ afternoon in which parents were invited in to walk around all the classrooms and see the children’s work. Well done and thank you to all the children, teachers and the many parent and community helpers who helped make this such a fun, hand-on learning week.
