A Wonderful Day of World Book Day Celebrations – 2016

world-book-day-mar-2016 (1)Well, what a fabulous day we have all had. This is now officially the 19th year that World Book Day has been celebrated all over the world and I think that Provo Primary has participated for pretty much nearly all of these over the years!

Here is one of my favourite photos from the day…  while on playtime duty this morning, I heard giggles and chatter coming from one of the playground bushes.  Peeking through the foliage to investigate further, I came across a group of  Year 2s all huddled together in a hideaway den, happily sharing their new ‘Book Swap’ spoils.   How delightful!  This photo truly captures ‘the enjoyment of reading’ and everything that we hoped to promote through this World Book Day event.

Today is World Book Day

pps-wbd-mar-2016Did you know that today is World Book Day!  Every year at Provo Primary we celebrate this special day with a variety of reading and storytelling activities. Find out more about World Book Day at this website.

This year, we will start the day with our PTA/School Council Book Swap, with everyone having the opportunity to swap an old favourite for new one.  Later, students from the British West Indies Collegiate will coming to read and perform stories to us, older and younger classes will be hooking up for some reading buddy time and classes will be enjoying their own ‘PJ’ storytime sessions.  With many additional book related in-class activities also planned, it looks to be an exciting day ahead as together we celebrate the joy and value of books and reading.

TCI National Education Week, 2016

tci-crestNational Education Week here in the Turks and Caicos will be observed between February 28th  – March 4th , 2016 under the theme, “Success for Every Learner”.

This year’s theme song for Education Week 2016 is written by Clement Howell High School Music Department and performed by the staff and students of the schools.  Well done to all involved!  Here are the lyrics if you would like to sing along.

During the week, schools will host a myriad of activities all over the country and the general public is encouraged to join in unity with educators across the country in support of the theme.   Here at Provo Primary we will have a variety of activities sprinkled throughout the week.  With World Book Day celebrations on Thursday 3rd including visits from British West Indies Collegiate student storytellers and our ‘Open House’ showcases on ‘STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Learning in the Early Years’ and ‘Topic-Based Learning in Year 1-6’ on Friday 4th, we are set for a busy week ahead.

Year 6 unleash their creativity with our new ‘Makey Makey’ kits

yr-6-makey-makey-feb-2016 (1)Year 6 were presented with the task of investigating some new technology resources at Provo Primary School today. Advertised as ‘an invention kit for the 21st century’, it was a session of experimentation, creativity and collaboration, with three groups exploring our new ‘Makey Makey’ interface controling kits.

Each group was given a Makey Makey kit, along with access to an array of resources to use with it.  Encouraged to read and follow the instructions included in the box, and to simply try things out, it wasn’t long before each group understood their potential and were busy working together to come up with their own inventive applications. Connecting their Makey Makeys with cucumbers, potatoes, carrots,  coins and playdough they were soon playing pianos and bongo drums, and creating control pads for computer games.

By the end of the session, through their own experimentation and interest, the students had learnt about the basics of computer input devices, had explored circuit making and had investigated the conductivity of different materials. Not bad for a 60 minute lesson!  It was particularly exciting to witness the moment when they realised that they themselves were conductive!

Makey Makeys are simple invention kits but, with so many possibilities, they offer incredible potential for child-initiated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning.  Our Year 6 were certainly enthralled and buzzing with ideas on what they are planning to develop in their next session.  We look forward to seeing what they come up with and sharing their creations with you!

Sharing a little love and appreciation at Provo Primary School

secret-angel-week-2016It’s ‘Secret Angel Week’ here at Provo Primary – a week where everybody gets to experience a little love and appreciation at the workplace and show just how much human beings can truly connect to one another and share happiness together — when we make ‘love and care’ a workplace “game”.

A bit like a ‘Secret Santa’, all of our staff have become a ‘Secret Angel’ to another staff member (Human).  Over the week we will anonymously shower our ‘Human’ with gifts, love, kindness and treats.  It’s wonderful to see how creative everyone gets, how they cleverly we all disguise our identity from our chosen ‘Human’ and how much we enjoy the challenge of trying to guess our own ‘Secret Angel’.

All will be revealed on Friday after school when the ‘Secret Angels’ will reveal who their ‘Human’ has been.

This year many of our classes are also enjoying a ‘Secret Angel Day’ in a similar way, spreading the joy across the school.  It sure is a happy week here at Provo Primary!

If you would like to enjoy a ‘Secret Angel Week’ at your school or workplace please see the rules of the game below. [Read more…]

Newsletters and Topic Maps – Spring 2016

topics-jan-2016Class newsletters and curriculum topic maps help you to keep in the loop and find out what is happening in your child’s class. Access important information, discover topics your child will be exploring and see how you can support your child’s learning at home.

Over the next week, look out for your child’s class newsletter and topic map in your email inbox or online here.

Our topics this term will take our children on learning journeys into story lands, exploring our senses, back in time to the world of the dinosaurs, the Ancient Egyptians, the Tudor age of exploration, conflict during World War 2 and out to space and into the future.  What an adventure well all be having!

Perhaps you have some knowledge, an interest or resources that will help to bring our class topics alive this term?  We love to hear from you if you do.

Santa Claus is Coming to School!

santa-2015 (3)Tradition continued here at Provo Primary, with Santa arriving on our last day of term on a bight shiny fire truck, welcomed by everyone singing ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’!

Wearing flip flops (island appropriate stage props!), but still otherwise dressed in his winter suit, he spent the morning sitting and speaking joyfully to each and every one of our children! Christmas wishes were whispered to Santa and in return a special book gift received.

Thank you, once again Santa for stopping by, creating lots of smiles and memories.  And also to everyone who helped make this tradition a highlight to our end of term activities.

Tree Planting at Provo Primary for World Aids Day

ps-tree-planting-5-2015Trees were planted all around the Turks and Caicos yesterday to mark World Aids Day. Here at Provo Primary, our youngest students helped to plant a mahogany tree in the school playground.

The event was organised by the HIV Prevention Unit and DEMA to celebrate World Aids Day. Celebrations are often marked with the release of red balloons but, in the interest of caring for our environment, Lynn Robinson of Big Blue Ltd promoted the planting of trees instead. The native Mahogany was kindly donated from the nursery at DEMA.

Although the children were too young to understand the significance of the occasion, they were keen to share their knowledge of what trees need to grow and how we can care for them.

Over the years to come we look forward to watching both our children and the tree grow up healthy and strong. [Read more…]

Preschool look after the Puppies at Potcake Place

ps-potcake-place-nov-2015 (13)The Preschool children visited Potcake Place as a part of their “Beautiful TCI” topic. We arrived very excited and were greeted by the little barks of Potcake pups. Mrs. Jane shared a few ways to take care of puppies with us which were very similar to the ways our parents care for us!

In small groups, we were able to bathe and dry two Potcakes, Pluto and Daisy. The children were quite gentle and calm. Perhaps the highlight of our visit was watching four, two week old, puppies learn how to drink milk from a bowl and then being able to pet them. They were so sweet and cute. One started crying because he couldn’t find the bowl. Mrs. Jane gave us the task to come up with names for them. So far we have suggestions of Pluto, Orch, Red, Snowy, Doggie, Picka, Noodle and Moo!

Our hatchling takes its first flight!

hummingbird-branch-23-11-15As we all arrived at school today for our lessons, our hatchling fluttered out of its nest ready for its first flying lesson. Perched on the branch next to its nest, with mum by its side, it did a few practice flaps before embarking on its very first flight. Under the watchful eye of mum it flew from branch to branch in a nearby tree. How lucky that a group of us were around to see this happen. Sadly my camera wasn’t to hand to capture this monumental moment but I’m sure you can imagine it in your minds.

For the rest of the day, the hatchling has stayed in this nearby tree while mum flies back and forth, still feeding it. It’s much trickier to take photos when they’re high up in a tree, that’s for sure.  I wonder how long it will be before the hatchling is ready to fly around for food by itself and become total independent?  Will they still be around tomorrow?
