JK Down at the farm

jk-farm-trip-june-2014 (20)The Junior Kindergarten have had a really great time learning about animals this term. During the first part of the term we focused on farm animals. We explored their habitat and young ones. The children enjoyed role playing, listening to stories and making paper and food craft to support the topic. They particularly liked matching the babies to their moms and dads.

The class visited a small farm to see how each animal and their young ones live, eat, rest, sound and responds. They were very excited during the visit. Talking about the trip on their return, the majority of the children expressed how much they had enjoyed themselves. The piglets and hens were the animals that they talked about the most. Please look at the photos of the children and look at their facial expressions while they are exploring.

Year 1 Visit the Conch Farm and Bay Bistro

yr1-conch-farm-2014 (8)Year 1 had such an exciting morning visiting Caicos Conch Farm and Bay Bistro as part of our learning about our current topic, My Country: TCI. When we arrived at the Conch Farm, we got a brief lesson of the history of the farm and also got to learn lots of information facts. Did you know that the conch is as small as a pin when it’s created? Or did you know that conch can float like a butterfly in the ocean before it gets a shell?

Kindergarten Visit our Environmental Centre on International Biodiversity Day

k-bio-diversity-day-june-2014 (1) Our latest field trip involved us exploring the beach and expanding our knowledge about the sea.  We started off by visiting the DEMA Environmental Centre, where Amy, the Environment Outreach Coordinator, shared many interesting facts about the Turks and Caicos Islands and highlighted the importance of taking care of our reefs.  Looking around the exhibits, we were thrilled to meet a real-life boa constrictor and to touch a humpback whale’s tooth.

We then headed across to The Children’s Park on our way to the beach.  A special tree planting ceremony was taking place in celebration of International Bio-diversity Day.  The Honorable Premier, Rufus Ewing,  asked us to help him to plant some lignum vitae trees.  He then invited us to pose with him in a photograph that would be featured in the Canadian magazine, PIE.  We felt like the paparazzi were all around us as cameras clicked and flashed.  What a memorable trip!

Year 2’s TCI Museum Opens its Doors to the Public

yr-2-tic-museum-june-2014-(6)For those of you who haven’t been down to the Y2 end of the school recently, you won’t have seen the amazing transformation that has occurred. What was once the Osprey classroom has now become the Osprey Museum!

As part of their homework project the Osprey children had to bring in a ‘museum piece’. It could be ANYTHING they wanted as long as it was from the Turks and Caicos Islands! It’s safe to say that no one expected such a wide range of items. We had everything from shells found on the beach to fanner baskets from North Caicos, a TCI stamp to a toy rock iguana, a sea fan to real life hermit crabs!!! You read right, we had real life hermit crabs in a crabitat!

Both parents and children alike got to visit the museum last week. It was great to see the Year 2 Ospreys being so brave and showcasing their knowledge by telling their audiences all about their objects!

If you haven’t been down yet please take some time to pop in and talk to the Osprey children about their amazing collection of TCI exhibits. And the best bit is…you get in for FREE!

Year 1’s Boats! Rafts! Boats!

yr-1-rafts-june-2014 (4)This term’s, big DT and Science project was to design and make a boat. First, we investigated different materials, looking closely at materials that were waterproof and would float. Then, the children drew up a plan using the materials we had collected. After that, we started building!

All the rafts and boats were so original and well-built. During our investigation, we learned that all the boats but one, floated and stayed afloat when different quantities of marbles (10, 20 and 30) were placed on them. We also saw how some of the boats tilted, depending on where the marbles were placed.

Read on for pictures of boat building extravaganza!

Our PTA “Cocktails & Curry” fundraiser – an evening of great food and friends

pta-cocktails-curry-2014 (1)It was an evening of great food and friends at Bay Bistro on May 16th, as the PTA put on a fabulous “Cocktails & Curry” fundraiser that netted thousands of dollars for school and classroom enhancements.

With all classes contributing beautiful artwork and over 50 other silent auction items donated by local businesses, there was lively bidding going on throughout the night, including some via email and cell phone!

As dessert was cleared away, the 100 person+ crowd made their way to the Sandbar after-party where the fun continued into the wee hours, raffle winners were drawn by DJ Dallas and guests were entertained by Johnny’s infamous fire show.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came and supported the school – we look forward to allocating the monies raised towards enhancing our children’s education!

Year 3’s Tipi Reconstruction

yr-3-tipi-may-2014 (3)This year we found that the tipi needed a bit of facelift.  So we kindly asked Mr Neal if he could return and work on rebuilding it with us. Parents came in the day before, however, to help in dismantling it, which gave us a good idea of how to assist Mr Neal in reconstructing the structure.

Once it was finished, we collected and painted lots of rocks and arranged them around the tipi.  It looks wonderful – do venture into the playground to have a look.  Sitting in it really does offer great shade from the summer sunshine.

Thank you to our parent helpers and to Mr Neal for you invaluable help.

‘No Bake’ Fun with Mrs B

yr-5-no-bake-cookies-may-2014Last week, Year 5 were lucky to have been picked for the chance to make some delicious and nutritious ‘no bake’ cookies. The idea was ‘cooked’ up by the fabulous School Council and Miss Mani so that each year group have a chance for some fun in the kitchen before the end of the school year.

Mrs B designated the children all different jobs of blending and mixing, stirring and sharing and, needless to say, everyone had a lot of fun! What was so great was we didn’t need that hot oven on once and yet we ended up with fourteen really tasty, chewy, flavoursome and healthy cookies, full of good things including apple butter, apricots, dates, seeds and so much more!

Thank you so much to Mrs B for your patience and skills in the kitchen and great job School Council!  What a great snack to munch on as we peruse our new Scholastic book catalogue!
