Provo Primary Golf Club a Smash Ht!

golf-club-oct-2013 During September and October the Provo Primary Golf Club was in full swing! Eight pupils were welcomed by our friends at Provo Golf Club for a fantastic five-week golf clinic that aimed to help them with all parts of their game. From chipping contests to putting challenges, longest drive competitions and straight shooting matches, our Golf Club had it all!

Children were able to learn the basics of the game on the beautiful practice greens and driving range, and were even able to get out onto the course to test their long game on a real fairway.

In our final session children used their new-found skills in a hotly-contested competition. Pupils realised that a smooth swing is only part of the recipe needed for a good golf game! In our “Cool as a Cucumber” challenge, children learned that a calm and focused mind was just as important as the club in their hands.

A huge congratulations goes out to all of our young golfers, as well as an even bigger thank you for our enthusiastic parent volunteers.  And finally a  giant thank you to Dave Douglas and the Provo Golf Club.

We hope to swing back into action in the summer! FORE!

Keeping Healthy Week in Action – Oct 2013

keeping-healthy-in-action-oct-2013 (20)After a week off for mid-term break, students and staff have hit the ground running with Provo Primary’s termly “Keeping Healthy Week”. School-wide activities, like the “Wake Up – Shake Up” aerobics session led by fitness trainer Jo Gray and the walk (or run) to school are great reminders of how important it is to keep active…and that fitness can be fun! The Early Years students’ certainly proved that point, wearing huge smiles as they flapped, hopped or raced across the school field as birds, bunnies and monkeys in their own set of races.

Read on and see some wonderful photos of the children in action!

Year 1 Explore Addition with Cuisenaire Rods

yr1-cuisenaire-oct-2013-2During the last few weeks in Year 1, we have been having fun exploring numbers. We have been using Cuisenaire rods to help us understand and explore numbers. We have been looking at pairs of numbers that total up to ten and relating addition to counting on.  It has been great to see the children really starting to use the rods to make beginning addition number sentences.  We also enjoyed making number sentences using Cuisenaire rods on the IWB.

Year 3 Explore Nature at the Amanyara Resort

yr-3-amanyara-oct-2013-3A fun educational morning, compliments of Miss Jackie at the Amanyara.

How fortunate we Year 3 Dolphins were. We were invited to go and visit the Nature Centre and walk the Nature Trail in the area of the hotel. A fabulous morning of ‘discovery’ was experienced. We were able to observe and handle the live residential conch, soldier crabs and sand dollars that live at the Centre. It was really interesting to see the soldier crabs walking together! We also learnt about plants in the TCI, used a microscope to see natures patterns of plants and insects, painted our own pot to plant seeds in, plus experienced the plants we talked about first hand, during our Nature Walk. Wow! We were so busy!

Year 6 Investigate Air Resistance

yr-6-parachutes-oct-2013 (4)Year 6 carried out an investigation to observe exactly how air resistance slows down a moving object.

We have discovered that objects which move through the air experience the force of friction. This is called air resistance. Air resistance acts against gravity on falling objects making them slow down as they fall.

Parachutes are used to slow down the speed of the person or object suspended from the parachute. The parachute is affected by gravity and air resistance.

With this in mind, we got to work making a variety of parachutes. Using different materials cut to different sizes we worked enthusiastically to create a range of different parachutes. When the devising process was complete we headed outside to put the theories to the test.

School Community Bake Sale

k-bake-sale-sept-2013To complement and extend on our exploration of our “Building our classroom/school community” topic, the Kindergarteners wanted to develop the outside “village” space by adding more sand toys and kitchen cooking items. We decided to have a bake sale to raise money to buy these items. Year one also participated in the sale.

The bake sale was a great success with lots of smiley customers enjoying our delights.  All the children helped to count up the money and altogether we raised $230.  We look forward now to buying some new items and getting to play with them.

What a wonderful example of how academic learning can be meaningful and fun!

10th Anniversary Location Celebrations

Provo Primary’s Logo is a Pink Flamingo. In ancient Egypt, flamingos were symbols of the sun. Flamingos also symbolize beauty, balance and grace. We believe that Provo Primary Flamingos are sunny, beautiful, graceful and balanced, who with their beautiful plumage, attract attention wherever they go.
Our little student flamingos certainly attracted attention and made us very proud yesterday as they captivated the audience with their performances depicting Provo Primary’s evolution and Pink Flamingo; their rendition of “I Believe I Can Fly’’; celebrations of our surrounding sporting facilities; and in thanking our community members for their assistance with sports. Jnr Kindergarten Start Off The School Year With A ROAR!

jk-dinosaur-sept-2013 (2)On their first Day of school, the JK  listened to the story “How Dinosaurs go to School “.  Just like the dinosaurs in the story, the children were encouraged to learn about their manners, simple rules and routines and how to be a friend. During the first couple of weeks, the children then looked after their own dinosaurs and this  helped to remind them of the things they have to do at school.

Now, a few weeks into the term, the children (and their dinosaurs) are now confident in their learning environment.  They have all made new friends and are enjoying exploring all the centres and using them each day to support their learning.

ROAR !  Click on to see lots of photos of JK in their first couple of weeks of school.
